Do we sometimes reject things just for the sake of it? What medical cover would you expect to get with the 'less than 5k' a year that we were contributing? We will complain that they will give only basic medical cover, at the rate at which we were going, they wouldnt even afford that 'basic' with the contributions we were making.

@Wendz...

My issue with NHIF is that they've not committed to ANYTHING...They should have specified the exact manner of additional services they will be providing BEFORE asking for more money...

All I've heard are vague promises of better services.. The last time I had a patient in Hospital, my private medical cover paid 185,000 while NHIF only took care of 15000.

What I need is a commitment that the percentage will be higher (in figures please) than this the next time so that I can negotiate to pay lower premiums to my private medical cover provider or negotiate for a higher salary from my employer as he'll be paying less to the company medical cover provider.

@Wendz I think you are missing the point.Suppose you are paying 2k/month to AAR.....how does paying another 2k/month(compulsory) to NHIF help you or your family?
Why make it compulsory especially at such high monthly rates yet your money will be used for all the wrong reasons.Ask any "rich" Kenyan today.....especially those dealing in Computers & Software...they all have multimillion shilling contracts with NHIF on things we don't even need.Is that how you want your 2k/month to be used?

@wendz, the people who will pay more are already covered by employers

+ the reason NHIF struggles is ghost patients

Gentlemen I think you are missing the point here. Other than NHIF saying that they will now cover outpatient, what benefits will be entitled to an a contributor?
Do you know that for 2k a month you can get an inpatient cover with a 2m limit?
What saferguards will be put in to place to ensure that NHIF can show value for money and eliminate fraud?
Until this is sorted, am with Atwoli in opposing this new levy.

COTU moved to court last week on August 5, 2010 to oppose the rates.
They should have considered:
· Defining the packages which informing the costings
· Setting/improving model health centres per "village"
· Making NHIF compete with other medical schemes
· Shouldnt NHIF also undertake out patient services?

I got a leaflet with the new services that they are offering and i was pretty impressed. I really cant trace it but when i do, i will post.

Unfortunately, those paying over 1,500 may be covered by employers. however, check out the reason why NHIF was formed. Unfortunately, its the well payed citizens that maintain it. you do not expect the corporation to afford to pay for those contributing such services just from their contribution. That would mean that lowly paid will get lower quality services in line with their contribution. a state corporation will not do that.

@mozerat... can you imagine they paid for you 15k for your hospital bill.... imagine how much you had contributed that year? only 3,600 for a whole year. Where do you think they got the other amount to cover the rest of the money from? its from Mr. Birdman who didnt go to hospital that year..

In the meantime, this is the tender document sent out to medical services providers by NHIF for provision of these services.

That social health contribution thing does not go down well with me.I cannot trust NHIF & there is no way to hold them accountable. How many times do you hear the name NHIF in scandals?
Truth is.....that 2k/month will pay for unnecessary tenders and the money will eventually wind up in a few rich people's pockets. It does not matter what promises they give or how many leaflets they print.
Social equity is not about punishing the middle & upper class and dragging them down to the bottom of the pyramid.....its about giving the lower class some affirmative action that pushes them into middle class. When you levy a mandatory 2k/month on someone who is already getting a 2Milli cover from AAR or Resolution....aren't you punishing them in the name of helping the lower class?Wendz?
