I'm planning to upgrade from the old "Tube" Box, to the new Flat Panel TV.

What are the salient points to look out for?

@Mukiha,
Whats your budget?

Do you want to change your TV in the next 5-10 years? If you don't:
- buy a FULL HDTV (1080) as a minimum - reason being that in 5 years, we may have many channels being broadcast in HD e.g. DSTV.
Along with this, are the no. of HDMI ports, its likely that in future, all devices will be using those HDMI ports.
- Warranty
- Look for a TV that can play all your media, e.g. music, videos, radio. you may not need that home theater system soon, except for the speakers. e.g the bravia EX400 that retails for about 50K can play movies from a USB disk, play your music..
- Other advanced features that may make your picture quality better

LED 3D TVs are the latest in the market. However, early adopters pay for all the R&D costs, so the price in two years will be about half of what they currently are.

Not sure if you can get one but try look for a Digital TV so that you wouldn't need to have the additional Set Top Box. I still have not found a shop selling them locally though.

Most of the Sony LCD's locally are KLV_ series while from a little searching online. the digital line should be KDL_

@tuvok, the digital ones cost a bomb
I also saw a demo of the recently released 3d Samsung TV complete with the optical kit.
Before I asked for the price, I leaned on the wall to get strength and just to be prepared ndio nisipate mshtuko wa roho - a 50" one cost...kshs 350k yaani you give out a ka vitz and walkout with the tv...take your pick.

what mukiha may need to know is the diff. between a plasma and a LCD tv and which is best (LCD) - I agree with mkimwa the idea of many ports is impt to be able to support a wide range of external devices that can be hooked to the tv eg digital camera, camcorder, ipods (audio and video), USB hard drives with music & video files, etc

Age-old wisdom told me that buying a TV shouldn't be a difficult thing; So I went into town, bought the most common set in the shops [Sony Bravia, BE 300] and took it home. Hiyo maneno kwisha.

If the kids want to play with gadets, watajinunulia yao! This one is for my wife and I, and we only watch local TV and the occasional movie on DVD - that was acquired "just the other day".

It's the same approach I give to cars: as long as it has four wheels, an engine, can carry five people [wife, me, 2 kids and maid] and fit our travel bags in its boot, i will buy it if I can afford it.

All these stories about VVTi, VVTech etc are irrelevant details... all cars built around the same five-year period are essentially the same.

Why would I want to play music through the TV while I have a Hi-Fi system, and a very good one for that matter?

Incidentally, the reason I bought the new LCD TV is that the old box had seen better days [over 15 years of service] and had been repaired twice in the last one year = time to go!
