cycling to work on your own?

Hi All

I'm a male white guy in my 30's
I'm movng over soon, and would like to be able to cycle to work

Someone said its not safe to do this
Is this correct? I'm I being naive even considering it?

tis a very wise thought but unless its in uptown districts or out of town areas, or you chose to reside near your work place, concequences are dire, including high chances of accidents, human walkin population as there are no designate paths for the cyclist, not to mention inhaling fumes on a daily basis.

What do you mean by saying "safe"?
Do u mean being knocked down by a car or your balls being knocked out by constant pressure on them by the saddle?

i mean being beaten up, bike stolen

i've landed in someones windscreen before, so i'm used to being knocked off!

I did 52 miles yesterday, mostly off road, so my balls are used to it!

Karen/Langata/Upperhill is quite safe. The problem might be car traffic- we've a not-so-good driving culture; we're angels when compared to Egyptians though smile

You might want to cycle from Karen to Upperhill and back from early morning only during the weekends (Sundays esp.) at first before attempting to do it during work days. The roads aren't the best, street lighting might be an issue and it'll take some time to get used to it and to anticipate our 'peculiar' driving habits. All the best.

Around those areas you shouldnt have a problem being beaten up or bike being stolen unless you decide to ride at night.

The problem you will mostly experience is that Nairobi roads are pretty narrow and there is hardly any provision for bikers... unless you are willing to carry your bike (literally) several times, you wont enjoy the ride... there is considerable traffic jam in the mornings and evenings so that will also slow you down and where there is no traffic jams, we(nairobians and for whatever reason) tend to have little patience with bikers..... expect some bullying on the road too....

Having that at the back of your mind, it wont hurt to try it. You might enjoy it and if not, you will have something to enter in your diary...

There are usually mud tracks on the side of the road, so i could stick to these where possible?

or is that not allowed?

The good thing with Nairobi, you can ride anywhere (including through a fence if you find a way....) there is little restriction.
