I'm planning on importing a 2003 nissan xtrail
I've got a man on ready to do this for me and has done quite a few before and has a personal recommendation

I've got 2 questions
1) Is importing generally cheaper?
2) will the nissan x-trail sell easily when i need to sell it?

if not is there other cars i should be considering that will sell quicker and are in a similar price bracket.

RESELL Nissan x-trail sell NOT easily when YOU need to sell it.

REselling a third hand Nissan ,subaru,VW,BENZ or any european vehicle is very difficult and in most cases if you compare the same model with A Toyota of the same value you will find that the Toyota resell value is higher.

The reason is mainly the availability and cost of parts.

just check the classified and compare the selling price of the vehicle you intend to buy.

If you are considering the re-sale value, don't go for anything else other than Toyota. Maintainance cost is also cheaper and spareparts are easily available than other makes. However, Toyota is more attractive to gangsters than any other make
