I'll be moving to nairobi in a couple of weeks, and will need to do a bit of work to support my clients.

I'm looking for an internet provider that is fast, reliable, and has a large/unlimited data usage

from what i've read, thats a big ask!

However, i've been looking at zain, but not sure on their speeds

Are all these providers (except satalite) using the mobile networks (sim cards)

How much should I be looking at spending?
Is there a clear winner based on the above requirements?

I ideally would like to use a Wifi router, its probably much cheaper to get it here, do i need one that take a sim card? should i be looking for anything in particular?

Thanks

Go to KDN - Kenya Data Networks. http://www.kdn.co.ke

The mobile phone internet zain etc.. is quite slow for any real business use. Go for a fiber link to your house/office. Might be more expensive on setting up but definitely worth it. I am speaking from experience

The providers use fiber from the sea and distribute via sim, fiber, satlink, vsat etc to clients

Look to spend at very minimum about 200usd per month service fee. Set up costs will depend on location. KDN can do a free survey.

I wouldnt go to any other provider except KDN and am so far very happy with their service.

Good luck

kdn I doubt. Safaricom is best in my opinion - sim modem is mobile enough. you should go to Safaricom retail outlets and apply for the unlimited data package.

They offer unlimited?
I wasn't aware they did that!

Can I only get this in store? as I couldn't see this on their website, and when I was over in April they said they didn't do unlimited

I'm interested to hear more
Thanks Kissedxx

I could be wrong on the unlimited. However the prices per mb are really good. I spend maybe 35usd per month normal home usage, mainly mail etc. I am on a post paid tariff so I pay end of month.

Safaricom provides fixed data services in particular wimax.Prices depend on your usage and the coverage is on all major towns.

Mr. Davies,
Your quest will boil down to location. Overall, I suggest you go with either Safaricom 3G or Orange/Telkom CDMA 3G+, depending on whether coverage for these technologies is reliable.

With coverage on equal footing, I would choose the Orange/Telkom solution due to cost considerations. Telkom gives you a 7days unlimited internet access package for Kes 990/=. You may then recharge weekly to enjoy this. Sadly, Safaricom withdrew a similar offer.

A smarter way is to invest in two modems: A 3G+ CDMA modem and a GSM modem. Get your GSM modem unlocked for free (so that you may freely use other SIM cards with it if u so wish). Then give all the possible options a test run before making your choice.

Other than that, internet access on the mobile networks is commonly billed per downloaded/uploaded data (Per MB) back in Kenya. Check that against your usage.
