My friend tells me that he filled a questionaire at a petro station last weekend, about his holiday travel patterns, today a lady from Hemingways safaris calls and tells him that he and his wife have won a free holiday voucher, either in Kenya or SA,valid for six months, and that they need to go to their offices (Westlands) today at 6.30pm to collect the vouchers.

Well,am am a firm believer that there is no free lunch - I feel there is a catch somewhere though I can't see it straight. Has anyone had an experience with such free holidays from Hemingways safaris?

It's not a scam. S/he will get the voucher for accommodation only [no meals]....but will have to sit through a two-hour marketing presentation on time-share holidays. At the end, they will try very hard to get him/her to buy into the scheme. Even if s/he doesn't buy, they will still give the voucher.

Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Does it mean that everyone who fills up the questionnaire wins a free holiday voucher?

Essentially, you buy a time slot in a holiday resort and that slot becomes yours for life,or for a fixed duration,say,20 years. You could buy, say, the first week of January and that becomes yours to use,to let,to sell,to...all manner of things that you would do with your property.

In principle, they divide the value of one unit in the resort into 52 segments representing the weeks in a year and then sell them off to different individuals...

That's the basic idea; but your friend will get the full details at the presentation....and it's not cheap to buy, especially if he is not a regular holiday goer

...Got that invitation, sat through the presentation for two hours...at the end they wanted me and my wife to make a decision there and then to commit ourselves. I found that odd...something you did not know, never heard and here you are being asked to write a cheque there and then...And I saw some people buying into the idea...Damn...unless i have sold poor man's maize and have nowhere to take the money...
