institutions have been flooding this share at 200bob (2million shares).... It still looks good for the long term but there is some risk for short term buying

Yes you can! The question is "Should you?". LOL. I couldn't resist that!Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

@ Guru

I was thinking of buying it so that i can benefit from the rights issue which will take place probably at the end of the year.

Rights issue isn't "a benefit". It takes money away from you. Quite the paradox for "an investment"

Anyways, this indecisiveness is taking it's toll now, they have been talking about conversion and splits for about 3 yrs or more. No doubt it is a monopoly, so I think it's good in the very LT, this is also factoring the dilution that may occur. And hopefully, they don't licence another power distributor in future, otherwise it will be another KBC( the broadcaster).

@horton you can benefit from a rights issue through averaging down.... And if you study some economics you realise that KPLC will be a monopoly long after we are in the grave.... And that is clearly the reason why it is the ONLY nse company where GOK is planning on increasing its stake and not reducing it...

@guru, i thot GoK is converting pref shares to real shares hence increasing holding to close to 70%, then kplc issues rights but GoK does not exercise so that their holding goes down to 40% . . . my understanding all along anyway

GOK is increasing their stake to 50+% after the restructuring is over and it currently owns 40%...

KPLC is key to development of the nation and I don't think it would be wise for a gov to allow the private sector to have majority stake/control. Don't forget that the gov represents all the people of a nation including me and you. Mr. Francis Atwoli would murder somebody if gov relinquished control.

BBI will solve it

The key to higher distribution for KPLC is not more homes connecting (believe me its unprofitable to supply a home) but rather connecting more industries (read industrialization), which depends on KenGen not KPLC.

Do you work for GoK?
Why not return KQ to GoK?
KCB too so we can have more bad loans/scams?
How about nationalizing the inter-city buses?
Oh, & why have private taxis?
Say did we forget to nationalize the farms?
Don't forget the cows!

@VVS,

You are partly correct but utilities should not be left to the hands of private sector perse. Private sectors always look finacial returns, never economic. That is why Eskom South Africa is government owned. Electricity prices have been ridiculously too low.

On the flipside, due to controlled prices, Eskom has been unable to raise enough funds to construct power stations and so SA had power rational a few years ago. They had to negotiate for upward tarrif adjustment of about 60%.
