Wow! What a roller coaster we've seen on the NSE since we bottomed out in November 2023 with the NSE20 printing 1416.On September 4th 2026, The NSE20 topped out at 4,504, a whopping 318%, and a level last seen in August 2015.
But today, after 2 years of rate cuts that saw the FED rate come down from a 23 year high of 5.25% in 2024, to 3.25% in 2026, the FED has hiked by 25 basis points today and signaled a further rate hike this year with more expected in 2027. This will have a ripple effect across the world and we have already seen the blue chips at the NSE like Equity Bank and KCB shed a bit of weight after crossing the 100 mark for the first time post bonus and split. Add to that the elections in the coming year and the situation gets interesting. Would recommend taking profits particularly from the bank stocks that have really rallied and get a bit defensive by going for stocks with the highest dividend yields(currently quite low with the recent rally), and allocating a bigger chunk to Fixed Income for 6 months then get back to great stocks like Equity Bank a week before dividend book closure date(they tend to fall a few days to book closure so the big boys can get a good dividend yield)
We should have also one good santa rally as we come to the end of the year and 1st week of next year so we should also be on the look out for this.
Currently the US indices are bleeding following the rate hike( which was expected, given the high inflation brought about by the US/Iran war and the resulting high crude prices) but what many investors didn't expect is further rate hikes next year. That caught them off guard.
If you are into crypto, well that's where the action will be until FED goes easy on tightening.
Bitcoin bottomed in November 2022.
The Fed hiked rates three weeks later, then hiked another three times over the following five months.
BTC protected the bottom through every hike and still rallied almost 100% over that period.
A similar sequence played out in 2018. Bitcoin bottomed days before another rate hike, then continued recovering into the end of year.
Zec is the new Bitcoin in this cycle. Rallied today like crazy despite the FED rate hike. Interesting times ahead!

Equity back to 100+
KCB back to 90+
DTB back to 180-ish
Absa back to 33-ish
Coop back to 35-ish

Most are quite higher than the lows of 2023.

Will they drop, rise or remain in some sort of horizontal range consolidating while waiting for 3Q results in 8-10 weeks?
Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

I guess, with the exception of Equity Bank, most stocks will trade within +/-ve10% of current price in the short term.
As for Equity Bank, with subsidiaries poised to contribute more than half of total profits by 2027, even the high political temperatures, higher FED rates, and yields pushing higher locally will not stop it from breaking previous highs. KCB will to some extent benefit pricewise to this Equity Bank strength, as it has in the past.

I don't understand how people panic so fast and in such a dramatic fashion!!!

One should always ask themselves "What has changed that has caused the change in price?" If it is people's emotions, you ignore!!

In this case it was a revelation of the proposed CBK regulations meant to ensure Banks too big to fail DON'T FAIL!!! That should be great news!

The new regulations might require higher loss absorbency, higher buffers, stricter controls or reviews on regional expansion and new product rollouts etc. But all some fellows saw was higher buffers => Dividend Squeeze!!!

Let me give some examples and why some of us don't see headlines and go into panic mode.

KCB - Dividend payment ratio 2025 - 33% including special dividends (interim and final), 2024 - 15.5%

Equity Bank - Dividend payment ratio 2025 - 30.15%, 2024 - 32.9%

All the rest are retained earnings primarily for growth and expansion!! Any slow down in expansion, more dividends now!! Faster expansion, same great dividends now, even more in future!!

Why panic???

These banks have too much headroom they can even double current dividends at their current profitability levels without breaking a sweat!!

Another example:

Equity Group Holdings maintains a core capital ratio of 19.1%, almost double the Central Bank of Kenya's (CBK) regulatory minimum requirement of 10.5%!!! KCB's core capital is at 18.6% Again way above the regulatory minimum requirement.

With information, you are relaxed! Without information, every headline, every price movement will be sending you into shock followed by uninformed buy and sell orders!!!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
