Just watching and listening to bloomberg tv comments on Chinas Evergrande default and makes me scared. Iam the only one?

Will it be felt in any significant way in Kenya?

It is the reason for the sell off this week. Global markets, Kenya included.

Probably short-term for Kenya since Chinese investors aren't huge in the NSE.

I think what happens with Saf is key to the NSE Index.

Kenya has many other major problems that overshadow the effects of Evergrande.

not sure there is anything to be scared of but you never know!!

but Evergrande was also involved in similar high yield product like cyton d'oh! they had already started defaulting early last year.

lets wait and see how this ends.

It most likely will have an effect on the price of commercial bonds issued by companies in emerging and developing markets. Evergrandes bonds are now trading at 30 cents to the dollar. Other Chinese home builders are also more or less heavily indebted. If international institutional investors for a moment in time deem emerging and developing markets as risky, we shall see an outflow of international investors. They will be selling safaricom, equity, KCB, EABL and Coop. These are the ones they mainly hold, so watch the price action on these 5.

Even if they pay this one, chances of being unable to pay the next are certain.

Interesting fact – Evergrande’s total debt $300 Billion. Our NSE total market cap $25 Billion. Goes to show just how much Evergrande is indebted or conversely just how tiny our NSE is.

Our economy is tiny and our revenue collections equally tiny, but we are borrowing as if we are competing with the big boys.
