Kenya Power on the spot for ignoring cheaper electricity https://www.businessdail...per-electricity-2485982 via @BD_Africa

Kenya Power is on the spot for prioritising expensive thermal power over the cheaper options such as geothermal and hydro, effectively setting up consumers for higher electricity prices.

Data by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) shows that the power distributor last month took the highest proportion of the expensive thermal power in more than a year while reserving the lowest slot for the cheaper geothermal power.

The IPPs have to make money.

Turkwell dam is about to overflow.

Do they run the turbines at 100% or they will just let the water spill away in such a scenario?

Yes the turbines can run at 100%,transmission lines capacity is the limiting factor to evacuate all the power generated

While releasing Q3 results ended September 30, 2020, Ormat (Or Power) says KPLC has made all scheduled payments for the third quarter and has started reducing overdue amount in October.

Could be KPLC liquidity has improved or they pay the IPP's first leaving KenGen with the egg.

You were right, something fishy is behind these IPP deals.

Quote:
The Paris-based news outlet Africa Intelligence reported that the US Department of State has been asked by the OECD’s Anti-Bribery Convention to open an administrative inquiry into Ormat’s contract with Kenya Power.

Above news is not yet released officially by Kenya Power or NSE yet it is all over the media.

Not that it makes any material change to Kenya Power trading as everyone could tell the results will be bad bad but this is information for insider trading that some people had and divulged to the media long before official release.

On NSE by the time you see information in the media it is already too late to trade on it.

We called this one out in 2017/2018 results, good to see we were right. Will take time to recover.
