Mpesa is getting a big hit with the closing down of social places

There's a lot more mpesa transactions generally, and turns out they aren't free... i'm really curious to see how the numbers pan out for mpesa Q1 & Q2

I have been breaking down my M-PESA transactions to below 1,000/= for the free sending and doing Bank-to-MPESA to take advantage of the free tariff. I am thrifty and i wonder how many Kenyans have been thinking like me.

Why would Vodafone sell the IP for M-Pesa? Reduced revenue projections from this golden goose? Tax avoidance in the UK?

It's of no use to them in Europe.
Vodafone needed the money for other uses.

What about license fees? I thought they had licensed it to several of their subsidiaries globally? Granted, the uptake wasn't as spectacular in some of the other markets as in Kenya.

I am beginning to believe this Ethiopia thing might never happen. PM Abiy is a 'reformist' indeed.

Might as well just buy a stake in Ethio Telecom when it goes on offer.

That issue of the transactions not being free is a hinder to uptake.

Kenyans Spending 5,000,000 Hours Daily Of Continuous Viewing Using Safaricom Data

By Juma / April 15, 2020 | 7:35 am

As millions of Kenyans continue to stay and work from the comfort of their homes due to Covid-19, millions seem to be finding solace online.

According to data from a giant telecommunications company, Safaricom, Kenyans are spending at least 5,000,000 hours of continuous viewing daily on data powered by the company.

Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Mr. Peter Ndegwa said that the combined data carried out daily on both mobile and home internet reached 2.34 Petabytes “translating to 5 million hours of continuous viewing.”

The majority of Kenya going online using data bundles from Safaricom are visiting Netflix, leading to an increase by traffic by 60 Gbps, enabling users to watch at least 20,000 movies at the same time.

The number of Kenyans visiting Facebook using data bundles from Safaricom peaked at 100 Gbps.

At the same time, at least 100,000 Kenyans are using Facebook Live to talk to family and friends about Covid-19.

“We have recorded double-digit growth in data volumes, demonstrating that more Kenyans are working, studying and connecting with loved ones from home,” said Mr. Ndegwa.

The number of text messages sent by Kenyans at the time as they continue to work from home rose by 70 percent to 350 Gbps because of the “affordable SMS offers by Safaricom.”

Most users prefer using Safaricom because of their strong internet that is fairly spread across the country as compared to competitors such as Airtel and Telkom Kenya.

In terms of prices, Safaricom is slightly more expensive compared to competitors.

The government of Kenya urged Kenyans to work from their homes as much as they can to minimize traveling and crowding to cut down on the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

The majority of Kenyans who are in their homes most of the time than ever before and are now using the internet more to interact across social media platforms.

IMO you can buy since many good shares I believe are under-valued but cash is king during such uncertain, irrational times.

With people in lockdown, data use is expectedly rising with Zoom, Netflix, YouTube et al. So this news is not new info.

In the short term, SCOM will be a store of value, a share unlikely to be eroded because their core business is unaffected.

In the long-term, it could be a real value. SCOM has proven to be positioned extremely well in our daily lives. When M-Pesa fails, there are tangible hiccups in our day-to-day lives; items left unsought, long lines at supermarkets petrol stations etc. When their internet is down, then there are big upsets. The only issue is that the price already factors this value. But in long-term, this could signal continued but progressive improvement.

TLDR; SCOM will protect your portfolio short term, it will likely get strong going forward. But its not the magical bargain you would expect in times like these.

The crowd will cheer your coronation as well as your beheading. People like a show, that's all.

Kenya's Safaricom forecasts 7% coronavirus hit to M-Pesa revenue

Kenya’s Safaricom expects a 5.5 billion shilling ($51.64 million) hit to its revenue from M-Pesa in the three months from mid-march after it adjusted prices because of the coronavirus crisis, its chief executive told Reuters.
The foregone revenue, equating to 7.3% of the mobile money platform’s annual earnings, will be caused by the removal of all charges on small peer-to-peer transfers to facilitate cashless payments to help to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The company, which is part owned by South Africa’s Vodacom and Britain’s Vodafone, is not worried by the projection, said CEO Peter Ndegwa, who took the helm on April 1.

“When Kenya gets back on track, our business should get back on track,” he told Reuters.

“We are in a good place to be able to weather this storm, but our business is linked to how the country comes out on the other side.”

The East African nation has 270 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The government has restricted movement of people and expects the nation’s economic growth to halve to 3% this year.

Under an initial 90-day deal with the government, all charges for cash transfers of less than 1,000 shillings ($9.39) have been removed by all operators.

M-Pesa, which was launched by Safaricom in 2007, is one of the most popular modes of payments in Kenya. The platform is used to send money, save, borrow and make payments for goods and services.

Ndegwa said that the M-Pesa business could benefit from increased usage as customers shun bank notes during the crisis, but cautioned that it was too early to say for certain.

“We are not factoring in any upside until we see how customers cope with this crisis,” he said.

Safaricom has experienced a surge in data traffic as people work from home and students turn to e-learning services.

It has doubled Internet speeds for its fibre customers - about 300,000 homes - and is accelerating installation of new fibre connections to meet growing demand, the CEO said.

Ndegwa, who was Diageo’s managing director for continental Europe before taking his new role, said the coronavirus crisis will present new opportunities in the data business, which Safaricom needs to pick up the slack from declining volumes in traditional mobile telephony.

“People are discovering they can work from home. Education and learning will change. Small businesses are going to learn they can digitise their operations and operate more smartly,” he said.

($1 = 106.5000 Kenyan shillings)
