EPS of 5.9 and a DPS of 5...That's already 84% payout. That EPS may still slide further with the decline in newspaper sales. Their revenue heavily relies on newspapers. Broadcast is still in the loss-making territory.

Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc are trying to grab a share of the video advertisement budgets. Competition is getting stiffer and companies are spending less on advertisements due to budget cuts.

The strategy I used in picking stocks has not worked very well. Its now time to change strategy. Dividend strategy has enabled me build an income from dividends but my portfolio has suffered badly from paper losses. NMG-60% paper loss,Kenre-85% paper loss. Carb-38% paper loss. Now I'm going to use value investing strategy.I will only buy stocks which I view as undervalued after my research.I will reorganize my portfolio by getting rid of stocks which are overvalued. Towards the goal of financial freedom

@Ebenyo, I feel you. Paper losses are just that, paper losses- you only lose when you sell (am talking about quality companies here). I don't worry abou my only paper losses in NMG because I have recouped my outlay from dividend procceds over the years. Im in my early 50s and have been investing for the last 20+ years. There's no perfect strategy, you only only get better with time. I have experienced paper losses in 3 cycles before, and they were just that. Met some young fellas at my brokerage firm who are asking me why dont I for example sell off KCB (my current ABP is Kes24.81 and book the gain? Sell off and buy what, I asked? Then he started fumbling around...because the same fellow is sending clients stocks picks advising them to buy KCB. When you have played this game long enough, you will appreciate that experience is the best teacher. In conclusion, don't forget Warren Buffett's 2 rules, and all the best! If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense

How? Show me the math. And what is "Value Investing"? It is buying value especially so when things look dire. NMG - I don't have these so I can't speak for it BUT the industry has suffered globally. KenRe - Nothing like the present to buy more. Carb - It is not one I have looked at it in detail but it seems to be well-run though it is in a stagnant market/sector. It has other assets. Of course, you want to sell over-valued stocks and buy undervalued stocks. That's sensible. At these prices I don't think you should bail out of KenRe and CARB. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

Most stocks will be undervalued by the time this bear run is done.

This is the kind of advice I give to anyone new to stock investing. Sadly, most people only learn after experiencing loss from speculating on stock price movements. They can't resist playing with fire once told it could burn them. And some quit altogether once they get burnt, terming the NSE a casino.

How did you manage to get a -85% paper loss on kenya re? It doesn't seem plausible from where I stand. The math please if you may. The main purpose of the stock market is to make fools of as many people as possible.
