Kenya Re HY Results
The profit before taxation for the period ended 30th June 2019 stood at Kshs. 1,380 million compared to Kshs 1,756.7 million for the period ended 30th June 2018 which is a decrease of 21%. This mainly attributed to the upsurge of claims by 49% compared to the same period in 2018.

Gross written premiums up 39.9% to ksh.8.86bn
Net earned premiums up 16.6% to Kshs. 7.429b
The higher performance is attributable to more opportunities in the Agriculture business whose premiums stood at 2,962 million and secondly the aggressive marketing of business which the growth was better compared to the same period in 2018.

Gross claims incurred and policy holder benefits up 47.4% to ksh.5.2806bn

Net Claims incurred increased by 49% to stand at Kshs. 4.995 billion compared to the prior-year figures of Kshs. 3.362 billion. The increase was as a result of the higher claims reported during the half-year period compared to the same in 2018.

Claims ratio 67% v. 53%

Expense ratio 41% v. 50%

Net profit margin 12% v. 19%

Investment & other income almost flat

Investment income for the half-year period stood at Kshs 1.975 billion which is 2% higher than the prior-year (Kshs. 1.94 billion). This was attributed to the higher interest from investments in government securities and fixed deposits.

Cedant Acquisition costs increased by 11% from Kshs. 1.828 billion to Kshs. 2.028 billion, attributed to the increase in the gross written premiums compared to the same period in 2018.

Management expenses for the period ended 30th June 2019 stood at Kshs. 916.6 million, an increase of 23% compared to the prior year 2018 which was Kshs. 745.1 million.

Cash at the end of the period up 27% to Kshs. 7.369b

The total assets increased from kshs. 44.362 billion as of 31st December 2018 to kshs. 45.828 billion as at 30th June 2019 which is a 3% increase.

The Shareholders' funds increased from kshs. 28.3 billion as at 31st December 2018 to Kshs. 29.1 billion as at 30th June 2019 which is was 3% increase.
