Non-scientists imagine that scientists sit down and just dream up some numbers and then proclaim them.
These claims are verified and results are reproducible. You can even measure the total mass of the earth using just an ordinary kitchen scale balance!

Take a course in geology to understand rock formation processes; then some atomic physics to understand spectroscopy; then some nuclear physics to understand isotopes and radioactive decomposition; then combine the knowledge and you will see how easy it is to gauge the age of an object that's several trillion kilometres away.
