Sometime back we had a very interesting conversation with collegues and the topic centered mainly about food. Some foreigner mentioned that Mrenda/Mrere is a super food with nutrients that scientists believe to be anti aging. So i went fishing, and realized that Corchorus olitorius - is the scientific name for Mrenda and the leaves

There are 17 active nutrients compounds in Jute leaves including protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, ash, calcium, potassium, iron, sodium, phosphorus, beta-carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and ascorbic acid.

beta-carotene, - the stuff that makes our eye live long also in carrots malenge and orange/red stuff

thiamine - Vit B1 Alcoholics are given this to repair their bellies that were destroyed by excess pombe

niacin - help lower cholesterol, ease arthritis and boost brain function

ascorbic acid - Vit C - Makes your skin look healthy

We have all we need in Africa and Europeans are getting on it

Future prospects

C. olitorius could be grown in a floating system with nutrient solution and could produce baby leaves, which would be interesting for the fresh cut leafy vegetable industry in Europe.
