@hardestwood, this is what Meteorological Dept are saying
Quote:
The MAM 2019 Long Rains updates

The Climate Outlook for the March-April-May (MAM) 2019 “Long Rains” season indicated that most of the country was likely to experience slightly above average rainfall except for parts of Eastern Kenya and the Coastal regions. The seasonal rainfall onset was also expected to be timely over several parts of the country.

However, a Tropical Cyclone known as “IDAI” located in the Mozambican Channel for several days (See Figure 1-Courtesy of Tropical Storm Risk (TSR)) has played a key role in delaying the northward movement of the rain-bearing Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The cyclone significantly reduced moisture influx into the country and this led to the continued sunny and dry weather conditions over the better part of the country.

There are possibilities of more TCs developing in the South-West Indian Ocean Basin and this may delay further the onset over the eastern sector of the country. Despite
the timely onset of the MAM 2019 seasonal rainfall over the western counties, prolonged dry spells are
likely due to the existence of the TCs.

There is a new cyclone Joaninha sitting over mauritius sucking our rains. Then it seems our weather patterns are messed up.

The term "tropical" refers to both the geographic origin of these systems, which form almost exclusively in tropical regions of the globe, and their dependence on Maritime Tropical air masses for their formation.

Tropics ni kuku huku:
Quote:
The tropics are the region of the Earth surrounding the Equator. They are delimited in latitude by The Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere at 23°26′12.5″ (or 23.43679°) N and the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere at 23°26′12.5″ (or 23.43679°) S

Yes, Tropics is the region between Tropic of Cancer & Capricon- so equator is included. However Cyclones don't form along equator belt within 5degrees of latitude.

It's official no rains this season. Climate change is real. Mjipange!!!

It is official. There will be no rains this season, the weatherman has finally said, painting a grim picture of the long-awaited rainy season that is now drawing close to an end.

Acting Deputy Director of Kenya Meteorological Department Bernard Chanzu said Kenyans should not expect the March-April-May long rains.

Impact of tropical cyclones

Quote:
“We’re experiencing a bad season. Historically, it is normal to experience variability of weather,” he said, adding “some years you get good weather, others you don’t. This is usually a possibility but the frequency with which these inconsistencies are happening is a hallmark of climate change.”

Authorities in Tanzania have advised people in southern coastal regions to move to safer ground ahead of the expected arrival of a cyclone.

Cyclone Kenneth is predicted to also hit neighbouring northern Mozambique with winds of up to 200km/h (124 mph) and torrential rain.

Residents have been told to expect damage to their houses and farms.

That is our rain that has been sucked by Cyclone Kenneth and deposited in Mozambique and TZ. We should expect below normal rains in .ke.
