National Geographic wrote:They say that black cats bring bad luck, but when Nick Pilfold heard about one lurking around central Kenya, he knew he was onto something special.
The Kenya-based biologist and his team deployed a set of camera traps throughout the bushlands of Loisaba Conservancy in early 2018. It wasn't long before he got what he was looking for: undeniable proof of a super-rare melanistic leopard.
The opposite of albinism, melanism is the result of a gene that causes a surplus of pigment in the skin or hair of an animal so that it appears black. Melanistic leopards have been reported in and around Kenya for decades, but scientific confirmation of their existence remains quite rare. "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear. The international media is reporting that this is the first time such has been spotted in 100 years. And I thought, really?!? Kwani there are no humans in Laikipia? A muzungu has to spot it for it to be a genuine spotting? Anyway I guess for the locals this was not unusual, it's like that guy in the US who had been using a rock for years as a door stopper just for the kin to realize later that it was the rarest meteor. Anyway, I hope Balala doesn't start relocating it. BBI will solve it :)

Okay, here's the deal: a leopard doesn't need to be spotted. In this case if it's pure black, then leave it alone guys! @murchr, what color do you want to apply for the spots? And what method will you use for the task, tie and dye? No, no, no. Please keep off our wildlife.

All Leopards have spots. But for panthers you have to actually see them in bright light.

So we're now debating on who photographed a black panther in 100 years in Africa? Supposedly the last one was photographed in Ethiopia in 2009. Huyu wa 2013 amekuwa akiweka picha wapi? Will Burrard Update: http://blog.burrard-lucas.com/2...black-leopard-in-africa/For clarification, I am not claiming that these are the first photos of a black leopard taken in Africa. I do however believe that they are the first high-quality camera trap photographs. The headline, “first in 100 years,” is derived from the following quote attributed to scientists from San Diego Zoo and first published by National Geographic: “these photos represent the first scientific documentation of such a creature in Africa in nearly a century”. I acknowledge that any claims that these are the first photos of a black leopard in Africa in 100 years are misleading. I encourage journalists to use this blog post as the primary source of information regarding my images.

Nobody said the panther did not exist, just that it was not photographed...The Nation said they did photograph another in 2013...but why not publicize and publish? It is understood that there are several of these black cats in the Aberdares but all we've heard is sightings no pictures. Without pictures it becomes mythical.
