For clarification, I am not claiming that these are the first photos of a black leopard taken in Africa. I do however believe that they are the first high-quality camera trap photographs. The headline, “first in 100 years,” is derived from the following quote attributed to scientists from San Diego Zoo and first published by National Geographic: “these photos represent the first scientific documentation of such a creature in Africa in nearly a century”. I acknowledge that any claims that these are the first photos of a black leopard in Africa in 100 years are misleading. I encourage journalists to use this blog post as the primary source of information regarding my images.

Nobody said the panther did not exist, just that it was not photographed...The Nation said they did photograph another in 2013...but why not publicize and publish? It is understood that there are several of these black cats in the Aberdares but all we've heard is sightings no pictures. Without pictures it becomes mythical.

The international media is reporting that this is the first time such has been spotted in 100 years. And I thought, really?!? Kwani there are no humans in Laikipia? A muzungu has to spot it for it to be a genuine spotting?

Anyway I guess for the locals this was not unusual, it's like that guy in the US who had been using a rock for years as a door stopper just for the kin to realize later that it was the rarest meteor.

Anyway, I hope Balala doesn't start relocating it.

Ngai they are saying photographed. If you read the national geographic quote, it says the man had heard that there was one around meaning someone/some people had seen it already.

Kwani hamjui kusoma?
