The Ministry of Education has already stated that the top five students of either gender in each sub-county shall get the school of their choice. What this means is that if say a boy scores 430 marks and he is ranked 6th in his sub-county, he would miss out the school of his choice but shall be allocated a school of a similar stature in this case, Mangu.

Alliance it is for formation and life skills.
I support this.... and I was at Alliance. He will discover his other talents and skills.
In the private school, that wants to make a name, it will be purely academic pursuit and nothing much. At every school, a child will discover other talents and skills. At Alliance, it is about being with peers. Other young adults who achieved the same academically. They will challenge him/her academically. Whether the child excels in extra curricular activities depends on several other factors. There will definitely be students from very diverse backgrounds which is perhaps a positive thing. At the private school. You really need to check if they will be other peers and if the child will be challenged to compete. The scholarship could be more for marketing the school than for the benefit of the child.The other thing to consider is the network of associates and contacts that the child builds which goes far and beyond the 4 years they will be in the school. Exactly. The scholarship has a hidden agenda. These private schools try all tricks to woo bright students so that the school mean can improve and hence help them attract more students. Basically the school uses the student as a tool in the marketing strategy. Also the only private school that can come close to Alliance academic-wise is Moi kabarak (and I doubt it's the one giving the scholarship) and given a choice between the two, the obvious choice is alliance. So I don't know which this good private school @frm2011 is referring to. All I know is that alot of untested newbies eg Nova have been visiting top primary schools to try woo the top students while marketing "holistic education".

They noticed him during a mathematics contest before the exam. The deal was for him to get 420 and above.

Interesting perperspectives about the form 1 admission process. Please keep them coming tuelimishane.
Last year, a kid in nairobi with 419 got his alliance slot. Another girl with 421 got her kenya high slot. I am told most of the top schools had their cut-off between 405-415.
Marginalized or not, I think it might be hard to get a slot at alliance with 390.

I wish him the very best and hope he gets the slot but if he has worked so hard to get to alliance, the very top school in the country, it would be unfair to him for the parent to decide to take him elsewhere. The scholarship offer shouldn't cloud the parent's judgement. 4yrs from now the parent will be very happy that the kid attended alliance.

Marginalized or not, I think it might be hard to get a slot at alliance with 390. The quota system was relaxed because it was very unfair especially to kids from private schools who scored >400 and were being denied places in national schools. I think that currently everyone with over 400 goes to national school. That said in some sub-counties there is low performance in public schools and a 390 might be among the top performers and get a place at alliance.

Back in our days(exam out of 700), some districts would have students admitted to top national schools with minimum 570 marks NEP guys would be admitted at 490! Even 470!! There would be no difference in performance once admitted between the NEP kid and the Elite Junior kid in performance. In fact, many of those sub-500 marks kids from marginalised areas became top performers! So yes, depending on performance in those marginalised counties, sub 400 marks could get a slot.
