I have always felt a such but today I came across a mathematical formula for Happiness
Quote:
happiness => [events in your life and their outcomes] - [expectations]

think about it... if your expectations are way more than the outcomes of what you have done - it doesn't matter what those things are... you are sad.
that's why you have celebrity suicides and addictions and almost no suicides in refugee camps. in Japan - a highly developed and the code makes people kill themselves because they have 'dishonored' their families. here is the deal... the math is simple - you can increase one side of the formula or reduce the other. but I guess that is easier said than done.

The only thing that complicates your formula is that "Happiness is a state of mind"

Let me give an example i.e you can choose to be happy because despite not achieving the outcome, you end up comparing yourself to someone who did the same and had a lower outcome than you. Even though comparing yourself to others is terrible

Yes... but that is captured in the [expectation] side of the equation. You don't expect to always have your way i.e reduce expectations and be pleasantly surprised when it works out and be OK when it doesn't.
So happiness is a state of mind that is guided by that formula.

Today I realized that without expectations there can be no pain.

But can one act without expectation? And is pain so bad that it should be avoided?

On the other hand, the above equation may not be mathematical because expectation can't be quantified. Neither can events...

Tycho you think too much!
You will know that you have arrived when money and time are not mutually exclusive "events" in you life!

Happiness is generally a perception and is also very relative in absolute terms from person to person and the masses.

Yes... because people have different experiences and outcomes and their settings (socialization) instills different sets of expectations. so the outcome will always differ but it's very much a product of that formula.

It is... you haven't proven much to the contrary.... you are happy when the outcome of an event in your life equals or exceeds expectations.

It's amazing how pride covers up for foolishness.

Foolishness in turn searches for pseudo-formulae for 'happiness' etc.

Extrinsic approvals, enemies, vain ideologies...

Agreeing with me at whatever percent isn't a virtue, it's just an indication of shallowness.
