Every man wants freedom. And the biggest freedom he can get in life is earning more than his bills. For this reason and also looking at how our leaders are driving this economy it is time to seriously explore other lifestyles other than formal employment.
I can find cheap solutions to many day to day things that a person needs.
Housing = built my own.
Fuel = burn charcoal + biogas
Water = dig borehole + Kentank rain catcher
Electricity = solar
Food = grow your own and raise chicken.
Transportation = bicycle
Trouble starts when I think of how to pay for medical bills for when you get sick and paying for internet and phone bills which are necessities in modern life.
Some of you are living just outside Nairobi and can add your interesting observations.
What do you think?

Go 100% solar bro. No need for all those other fuels and hassles. How often have you had a medical emergency in your life? If you walk daily, piga tizi jumping up and down like Mugundaman, eat healthy and avoid too much pombe hosi should be the least of your worries. If you are still worried get AAR cover. They will airlift you even from an island in the middle of Lake Baringo. When you have vast wilds of land to explore, farm, maintain, animals to feed and take care of and a fit slim wife to manhandle faithfully in holy matrimony, internet, cellphone and TV will not interest nor concern you much. Besides, Kenya is a small country. In less than a few hours you are in Nairobi CBD from any corner of the nation these days. Faster if you fly.

This is a villagers life buana. You can't come to Nairobi and cook with cow dung in your apartment.
Life is short. Live passionately.

No need to burn wood or charcoal, induction cooker uses 10% of a normal electric cookerso solar will power it without a fuss, if it's cold go for the oil based electric heater in place of normal electric ones, I have noticed that LG products with the inverter tech are also very power efficient making them ideal for off-grid living, they are Abit expensive but worth it.
I have been eyeing the off-grid life and I get inspired by handeeman and homesteadeconomics YouTube channels check them out if you can.

Good points. I'm not too worried about my health but the health of the wife and the children.

I didn't know solar energy had come such a long way. I have been assuming you can only power TV, radio, computer and things like that. Things that don't consume lots of power. I didn't know they make heaters that can be powered by solar energy of a small home. I will definitely go on a research mission

The biggest challenges with full time use of off-grid solar is unreliable sinlight hours and storage. This year Nairobi and environs were mostly cloudy. Heavy duty chemical batteries still expensive. Solar has to be combined with other energy source like wind, hydro or Hydro Carbon.

Although I think you can get a btter DiY solution for the ksh. 1,747,000 solar system being sold by Hotpoint it might be a better solution for the novice or people who just don't have time buy their own
here https://hotpoint.co.ke/c...8kw20000whr2000wp_1174/

I was doing my maths and for the same amount you can get 8 more solar panels, and 6 more batteries, the frame you can get the local chomelea to build you one.

Looks good. Worth the investment IMHO. Saw a similar package that comes direct from China for much less cost via Alibaba. And these systems should be even cheaper in the future as the cost of solar panels and lithium ion batteries both continue to drop each passing few months.
