Is it just me or is Kenya's population growing too fast? Just a few years ago, we were 20m. Now I hear we are 51m??

Is this a good or bad thing?

BBI will solve it

It is a bad thing. You cannot have population explosion yet there are no jobs.

what creates "jobs"?

I have always thought a young "educated" population is a boon as opposed to a curse. it's a demographic dividend if they are educated and the country is a bit open. it's a ticking time bomb if they are illiterate thug in a society one cannot progress unless they know people.

Anyway, Kenya has never reached optimal employment rates since it began.

Countries like China, S.Korea even Germany are having issues regarding their population. In Russia things are hot. Putin is trying to play hard, why?

Maybe we've never settled enough to understand population dynamics.

It can be good or bad, depending on how you want to look at it.

Good for farmers and companies like Safaricom who are selling needs, bad since there's no industry in this country big enough to swallow the large idle labor, plus with limited resources a large population puts pressure on the existing resources.

Seems like the death rate has slowed down

True. A larger % of Kenyans are living longer now than they used to.

Interestingly the demographic distribution is also changing. We now have more 10-15yrs olds compared to 5-10yr olds who are in turn more than 0-4 yr olds.

First time it is happening in KE in our recorded history. Also me-think we are the first to achieve this in SSA.

I wish we can innovate on a very big cottage industry that can absorb say 60% of the youth. I think we can quadruple our wealth in just one generation.

With such, the dependant population would be so small in say next 15 years that we could wipe out poverty!
