But instead of addressing the issues that were causing low morale within the ranks, they let the coup happen so they could use it as a pretext to clamp down on dissidents.
By the way, this should disabuse everyone of the notion that RAO was behind the coup. The coup happened because Airforce soldiers were disgruntled and the high ranking officials duped them into thinking that the army would join them. Kumbe army people hate and are resentful of Airforce people. And they had no problem mowing down their fellow soldiers in a hail of bullets even after they had surrendered.
According to that article;
a)Moi had planned to have the coup plotters arrested but the coup attempt happened before he could do that.
b)The coup plotters led by Ochuka were working with some civilian citizens! Raila was a dessident then.
Eti Moi had planned to have them arrested?
What stopped him?
Presidents die from coups. If Moi was worried about being overthrown, he would stopped the coup months before. He would not have taken any chances.
But he did not stop it because he knew that a bunch of idealistic Airforce privates could not stage a successful coup. Its almost impossible for any Air-force in any country to stage a coup. And its virtually impossible for an AirForce private to stage a coup. Somebody high up cheated Ochuka that the army was going to join him. This whole thing looks like a setup by Moi and his people.
I posted another article earlier from the Nation that says that Air Force commander, Maj Gen Kariuki told Moi that there was going to be a coup. And he told him this a month before the coup happened.
Why didn't Moi listen to Kariuki?
Instead he fired Kariuki and removed his rank and retirement benefits.
The funny thing about this coup is that so many people even at the University knew about it well in advance, So anyone who thinks Moi did know or found out too late is crazy.
