Is Uhuru serious?

He has struck a deal to bring 100 Cuban doctors to Kenya. Which hospitals will they be posted to? How much will they be paid? Do they speak English or Kiswahili?

Are you the only one who is not aware that we have a deficit of doctors per WHO standards? Kenya needs 63000 more doctors. Language is learnt after all, most of the patient interaction is done by the nurse and clinical officer. The doc comes later to read notes and make follow up consultations.

Did the 500 doctors from Tanzania eventually come?

This is a good sign, but more than the doctors, I hope the president has a team looking into how medicine is financed, managed and delivered at the governmental level, if he is serious about universal health care.

Otherwise he is just playing with our health.

Playing with our health is more like it. Stupid move from a govt that is more keen on window dressing than sorting issues.

Even with the embargos, Cuba managed to have top notch medicare, affordable and accessible to all its citizens. Americans go to Cuba for treatment! Kenya would be blessed to have them here and learn how they do it

50 arrived last night then

Justice Onesmus Makau has issued conservatory orders stopping the government from recruiting Cuban doctors.

Makau, who is of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, gave the order on Wednesday, saying the 50 who landed on Monday will not begin work pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

Petitioners Samwel Nduati, Reuel Maina and Francis Thuku - who are unemployed doctors - note that Kenyans should be given first priority, in line with the national values state in the Constitution.

While I don't agree with the hiring of foreign doctors. I feel this order is a waste of our resources, why were the conservatory orders not issued before these docs landed in Kenya?

Today's subject for debate:

I think I'd trust a Cuban doctor over a Kenyan one...
