Yesterday evening about 9pm I was driving on outer ring road. Between Donholm and Tajmal section, I encountered three vehicles, two of them Matatus driving in the wrong direction with lights on full blast.

Driving towards oncoming traffic on a one-way-traffic-road!!

Not only was this annoying but also scaring as I was not familiar with the road and needed to keep watch on where the exits and turn offs are to avoid missing my way.

The last such offending vehicle was a 33 seater matatu that I encountered near Tajmal, coming from the direction of JKIA on a road that’s exclusive for vehicles cruising towards JKIA! I figured it would have to travel for more than a Kilometre in order to switch to its rightful lane.
This Devil will care attitude is our undoing.

Aside from the need to have such behaviour reined in, we have to appreciate that it’s also a function of how we are cultured.

Question is, are we doing anything to debrief the next generation of this warped culture!!

All these accidents are caused by driver STUPIDITY/LACK OF COMMON SENSE ...overtaking at corners, overtaking kwa yellow line, driving on the wrong lane, overlapping, speeding, free wheeling, phombe etc etc. One only needs to drive from nairobi to nakuru to see the kind of IDIOTS on the roads...from personal cars, to matatus, buses, trucks, boda bodas. If kenyan drivers used common sense, accidents would be a thing of the past.

All the above happens and no consequences from authorities. Only death or injury of driver and helpless victims. My take enforcement is and has been wanting, blame it on corruption.

Most kenyans are not cultured and our IQ is generally low. Give someone with low IQ a big machine and expect nothing but deaths and injuries. I think it is high time we phase out matatus completely and let each town/city get a reputable bus company to do transport for them. Am sure Chinese and Europeans would be willing to invest in this. Such a company you can easily hold them accountable. By the way now in Europe most buses are now E-buses,something that the matatu industry cannot afford

Anyone who has driven on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway can tell you of the arrogance of bus drivers. They are at the controls of high speed, powerful turbodiesels (those Scania engines are something else). When a bus changes lanes to complete an overtake, it will complete the overtake, other drivers be damned, especially of smaller vehcles. The guy flashes lights at you. It is for them to scram for their lives by going off to the shoulder. Tough luck if there is no runoff. Unbelievable. The bullying by bus drivers is constant.
This driver probably assumed it was a small car oncoming and it would make way, plus it was dark. There is no cure for human stupidity but you can clamp it down severely. First, the power on those buses needs to be cut off, limit speed to 60. Matatus too. Inspection every three months. Tampering leads to heavy fines.
Its a start.

I support you on this speed capping. KEBS should talk to the manufacturers of those buses and limit the speed at 80kph from the factory. For the current buses and matatu the fine for tampering with speed governor should be permanent ban of the bus/matatu

What? You drive like a MAD WOMAN and crash head on into trucks and then you blame Ohuru? Unataka Ohuru afanye nini? You want Ohuru to be on every mad driver's passenger seat...to prevent them from commiting suicide? Let the mad drivers kill themselves coz the roads will become safer....fewer idiots on the road.

The problem is that the mad drivers are a risk even to those driving safely on the roads. We need serious enforcement of traffic rules to get these mad men and women off out roads

Banning night travel for buses is not a solution. Actually, i think this will cause more problem. I have said it here before that Nakuru Town acts as a bottle-neck to traffic traveling either way and this is witnessed during the day and at nights as well. What happens when you squeeze all that traffic to between 6Am and 7Pm since people will still travel? Is there a likelihood that by doing so we might even increase the chances of more accidents? This is not a well thought out decision and i still insist de-congesting Nakuru-Mau Summit section will prove to be a better way of reducing accidents along the Eldoret -Nakuru highway in the meantime as we find ways of addressing other issues such as corruption, by-passes, road indiscipline and such.

No,the drivers are not committing suicide they are mostly killing others. One driver dead,37 Pax gone! No one is safe unless you don't travel by road at all.
Uhuru,RAO or any other politician will have no use for you when rescuers remove your broken body from the wreckage. You will be just another statistic.

Some institutions in this country are run by total idiots. Thousands are now stranded in major towns and the few available PSVs are charging an arm and a leg. NKT!!!!!
