Yes people are dying coz of driver MADNESS. You overtake carelessly expecting to "kupenya", or incoming vehicle to stop or go off the road asikugonge.

This is what typically happens on our highways these days.

People overtaking recklessly, on the wrong side of the road, off the road.
Life is short. Live passionately.

A class one pupil can tell why there are so many accidents on our roads yet we persist with the same bad driving habits.

Corruption.vehicle don't go for inspection yet they have inspection stickers .no enforcement of speed limits...no speed governor..I don't think a bus riding at 80 kph would cause much damage.its genocide on our roads watched by a failed government

Are we as drivers not to blame? A bus riding at 80KPH uphill colliding with one descending downhill (probably on free) at 80?

This is a simulation of a crash at 80KPH

I still maintain, that road needs to be redesigned. All these measures ati no driving at night bla bla is nonsense.

We drivers cause the accidents: 1. Carelessness 2. Fatigue 3. Drivers driving too fast on unfamiliar road 4. Drunken driving.

In addition, it is very rare to find road signs especially on roads constructed before the Chinese arrived.

NTSA will not help end the road accidents. The only thing they do efficiently is to collect revenue for GOK (I have said this here before). The current statistics on road accidents are annoying, painful and unacceptable. Something must be done. As drivers, we must have a deep sense of responsibility and love for other road users and do everything we can not to cause an accident. NTSA bure kabisaaa.

Anyone who has driven on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway can tell you of the arrogance of bus drivers. They are at the controls of high speed, powerful turbodiesels (those Scania engines are something else). When a bus changes lanes to complete an overtake, it will complete the overtake, other drivers be damned, especially of smaller vehcles. The guy flashes lights at you. It is for them to scram for their lives by going off to the shoulder. Tough luck if there is no runoff. Unbelievable. The bullying by bus drivers is constant.
This driver probably assumed it was a small car oncoming and it would make way, plus it was dark. There is no cure for human stupidity but you can clamp it down severely. First, the power on those buses needs to be cut off, limit speed to 60. Matatus too. Inspection every three months. Tampering leads to heavy fines.
Its a start.

Statistics show that 75% of fatal road accidents happen at night. Why? Drivers are mostly fatigued, some have been working during the day, others are drunk...Most people who drink and drive do it at night, many drivers don't see well at night and yet they don't know it..no one tests the eye sight of drivers in kenya before being authorised to drive. It is at night that most unroadworthy vehicles are brought out to the road as there are fewer policemen and defects can't be seen easily. Such vehicles have no reflectors and when they stall or stop on the roads other drivers are unlikely to see them. All that coupled with the arrogance of most drivers in Kenya and corruption results in high loss of life as we have today.

What can you do as an individual? Feeling helpless and blaming NTSA won't help you. You should...
1. Avoid night travel as much a possible. If you must use public transport, travel during the day. If you drive make it your policy to sleep in whichever town you are in at 7pm and travel the following morning.

2. Avoid driving while fatigued. If you feel fatigued stop somewhere and doze off for 30 min before getting to the road again. Also don't drink and drive

3. Obey the traffic rules as much as possible...important :.. always have everyone in your car put the safety belt on without exception.

4. Go for refresher defensive driving training regularly.... if possible once every 2-3 years.

5. Advise your relatives and friends to do the same.

Accidents are not an act of God. They are caused by human beings and they result in people dying before their time.
