When people started subdividing their 5-acre plots into 1-acres and later into halves, the luster of Karen faded and those who value green suburbia moved out. It has nothing to do with race. It's just a question of your definition of "peaceful environment" Same has happened in Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Lavington. Muthaiga is still holding out but only time will tell.

BTW: This reminds me of the case of Java waiters reluctance to serve black customers. Many saw it as racism but it was simply because whites give higher tips than blacks. My cousin worked there and she confirmed it.

Most of the original 4,600 Karen estate is still owned by the mzungus particularly upper Karen. Lower Karen or what we used to call Langata/Karengata back in the day and the plains area are now where the muafrika reside in their 0.5 acre plots . Ofcourse we have people like the Kiereini who managed to get 20 acres(yes the original subdivision of Karen estate was 20 and 10 acre plots). Areas like Hardy are still white dominated and a casual drive there and you think you are in Nanyuki or Greenpark in Naivasha. Jana i stopped by Purdy Arms on Marula Lane,Off Karen road with my better quarter and we were the only Africans @SufficientlyP

If you are going to to move in an area, why destroy what makes it different? But this raises a different point. Does the absence of this constituency devalue the area (because not all people going there are cutting trees)?

"Others" really don't appreciate well planned living zones and the neighbourhood effect that it brings. Quote:The Karen and Lang’ata District Residents’ Association has accused Nakuru nominated MCA Alice Ndegwa of illegally putting up hostels in the area.
Zoning rules in the area do not allow multiple-storey buildings. The site is near the Lang’ata South Road, 300 metres from the Nairobi Academy. A resident said, “She is targetting students from the Catholic University of Easten Africa and Tangaza College. These hostels will crowd the area and destroy the serene environment.”

It's good to respect zoning laws.. Why wouldn't Alice settle for two stories instead of multiple.. Greenery is the biggest distinguishing feature of Nairobi's suburbs. If someone wants to chop down trees aende Mombasa Road kujenga. It's even cheaper to leave the trees alone, so cutting them is a sign that someone is just classless beyond redemption
