Cheap is expensive. What is the point in staying in some dirt cheap outfit in one end of town and using a taxi to and from the conference every day? My advise, if it a conference chances are they have recommended some hotels that they have negotiated rates and transport with. If you still looking for cheap you can stay at one of the Formula 1 hotels, cheap, great for a shopper but would no recommend them for someone staying more than 3 days.

@Giko. My mind is made up on what kind of accommodation I want. If I can get a '680' type hotel near the venue, I see no need to staying at Serena. So do you have any names of so called Formula 1 hotels?

You Can try Lala-nathi Guest House within Jo'burg. Very nice, clean and comfy.

Plus they organize transport for you.

Formula 1 is a chain of many hotels. Find one near where the conference is on the internet i.e. Google 'Formula 1 hotels in Sandton'

@gathinga - Ive stayed at a formula one hotel in Sandton. Good and cheap accommodation... plus you can sleep up to 3 people in their rooms. They provide breakfast only (unless they have changed now).

plenty of bed and breakfast joints, usually family run and cheaper than hotels. get whoever is organising your trip to hook you up with the ones closest. costs about 500 rand for b&b. that's about 5k kshs. the zimbabwean ladies who work there are also veeeeeery generous, for 100 rand, they will ensure the bed bugs won't bite...
