David Villa becomes the first signing for Barca, Cesc expected to follow if Arsenal accept the 30M pounds and Yaya Toure to boot as the offer from Barca - they don't want to pay too much coz he came from their youth ranks.

Cesc told Wenger he wants to leave so Mr. Bean has to try and get the best deal from Barca - he doesn't want to go anywhere else.

What other moves can we expect?

I don't think Wenger will accept anything less than the asking price (40-50m)for his captain...Wenger has the upperhand on this one considering the fact that Cesc still has four more years to his contract. He has also indicated that he is not so keen on Y. Toure or Ibrahimovich as its being suggested. Fabregas will leave for Barca at some point but unlike Henry he won't come cheap for Barca!

Its being reported in the Spanish press that Barca transfer kitty is not as strong as it was last year especially having just signed David Villa from Valencia

Wauze Cesc. The guy is good no doubt. The team is built around him. But the guy is too slow, and when he runs fast, he get a hamstring. What happened to the days of Arsenal's counter attacking football. Henry, Bergkamp, Viera etc.. were a joy to watch while on full flight. That is what drew us to Arsenal. I would like to see that kind of football again.

True dat. He is the second main reason why Man-U lost the title.

The main reason of coz was Drogba's offsides in both matches against Man-U.

@Slammers, it's not speculation about Cesc, every source (Sky Sports, ESPN Soccernet, blah blah) have confirmed that he has informed Arsene of his desire to move back to Barca, Barca are willing to make the move with the offer I mentioned above but will not until Arses make the move i.e. try and talk Cesc out of it till he at least finishes the contract or finally decide to sell him for a certain price.

The problem is that when a player wants to leave he'll leave, it's just a matter of when (Ronaldo, Berbatov from Spurs, e.t.c). So his days are numbered, it's only a matter of when.

Meanwhile Villa have rejected the 20M pounds offer by Man City for Milner and SAF says he'll only do one big signing if the price is right!!! I don't think Man Utd will be competitive (not in the CL at the least) with that kind of mentality, sure we have good players but the new signing Hernandez is untested and we need more depth! I hope he sees that soon

Smano,
Just some thoughts for you bout United next season:

"Interesting comments from SAF regards new signings in the summer.
However he is being very shrewd. Do United need to make wholesale changes to a team unlucky to be beaten in Europe an missing out by 1 point to the "all conquering" Chelski?

Yes they may have no cash, but maybe Fergie knows his squad better than us. Hargreaves (a huge player) and Owen may be fit, he has strengthened a solid defence wrecked by injuries to Vidic and Rio who should be fit. Valencia and Nani will improve further, and Anderson may return from injury and actually be good???

Up front Rooney is god, Owen will chip in, and Berbatov actually played pretty well at the back end of the season! Hernandez may be a sensation too and Macheda is back from injury and a year older.

In an unprecedented fifth para, have faith, they'll be back with a vengence.

I dont think Mr Bean will want to retain a disgruntled Cesc, him being captain and centre of team's play. So he has no choice but to let the fella leave and make money to bring in new players and offcourse change the team's style of play.

Without seeming to bash Arsenal - It is probable that Cesc has found himself in Torres position (albeit alittle better): Sticking with the club (earn 10 points on loyalty) and miss winning anything (earn 0 points on personal front) or leaving(earn minus 10 points on loyalty) and winning something (earn 10 points on a personal front).

The choice is obvious. And in any case he will face less risk of breaking his legs and prematurely ending his career in spain.

So the issue for barca is the money 50m. But with addition of Ibrahimovich and yaya toure. The deal should be done without breaking the bank.

Romours are that SAF made a bid for Jack Rodwell the everton starlet and that Chelsea want to sign Kaka. Mmmmh!

@mcreggae - Good analysis

But not too sure that SAF will have lots of patience with Berbatov (for not being 'Rooney' when he was needed), Hargreaves (storming out when he was excluded from a team), Anderson (for a bust up with SAF)

But hey...SAF is the knight of football and barring injuries to Rooney next season will be interesting.

Applause Good stuff McGreggor.
One of the major issues SAF has with the market today is that prices are extremely inflated.
IMHO I do not see a position United desperately need a signing

Wenger has never been known to keep a player against his wishes but i doubt he will let Cesc go with the 30m being offered by Barca. The asking price for his signature keeps going up with the latest being 80m. The Arsenal Chairman has indicated that they are not remotely interested in selling the player....he will leave the Emirates eventually but i don't think it will be this summer.

Barcelona's sporting director, Txiki Bergiristain, stated: ‘It’s great news that he wants to come here and I think that one day Cesc will have to come to Barca. But what matters is Arsenal and what their decision is. They think he is a very important player for them. We have to respect that"

On Man U transfers....Its claimed that he can buy any player he wants but the management is not ready to pay "Stupid wages" . I think SAF needs to invest in new players especially due to the fact that he has several aging players (Giggs, scholes, Neville, Van Der sar, Hagreaves, Ferdinand) most of whom were influential this season.

The latest on Fabregas is that he is willing to sit on the bench at Barca and win a trophy(from the bench) than play regularly at Aseno and finish the season trophyless.

Remember even if he joins Barca,he will not walk straight into first team. There is Busquet, Xavi and of coz Iniesta in midfield. The latter two have kept Cesc out of the Spain national team for quite a while. Thats the dilemma the boy is facing.

I largely agree with you McReggae and have never doubted Man Utd to put up a worthy challenge but whether we lost by 1 point or 10 we still lost...look at the 3 nil loss to Fulham and then 1 nil loss to Villa at home, all coz Vidic & Rio were out and it has happened often - in the 2008/2009 season, despite the times when both were injured, we had Ronaldo to provide goals.

But depth is required for trophies and depth cannot be achieved if you don't have a sure replacement for each player. Remember when Jose joined Chelsea? For those two seasons, there was not much difference between Team A and B Chelsea. While SAF will never go that way i.e. buying expensive players whom you're then forced to sell coz they're not seeing playing time e.g. Shwan Wright Phillips then, we still need one or two additions, not 5 like Benitez wanted for L'Fools, just one or two.

Right now I still think Barca is the team to beat in the CL, Jose Mourinho/Guus Hiddink or not. That's what depth is.

@McReggae/Smano

In history exploits have never been repeated. Kobe once scored 55 points for Lakers in a gme, never to be repeated..Ronaldo scored 8 goals in a certain world cup, never to repeat the feat, Peyton Manning intercepted ball after ball to help the Colts win a superbowl championship, never to repeat that again. Ronaldo scored 40+ goals for united never to be repeated, now Rooney scored a number i can be sure as the sun will set today he will struggle to reach 25 next season, that is a given

SAF needs to a bolstering midfield and a finisher..Rooney is not in the class of finishers..

The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday's logic.

@njunge - our football (mis)chiefs cant differentiate a ball from a mango. Great work in abidjan. I thought we had a few academies. And the just ended coke competition should throw up some names that can be moulded. Talent iko. Development strategy hakuna!

Just to add Man-U needs not just depth but experienced depth (we saw what rafeal did in the CL).

If the league is to be won with say 90 goals and Rooney provides let say 30. Then a good proportion of the balance say 20 goals must come from someone dependable. That is what is missing upfront.

Cesc is better off warming the bench at Barca and sooner than later he will get his chance. He might not get the prized position that he currently holds at Arsenal but maybe in a year he would be a regular and a key part of the team. I think nothing that Arsenal have done so far (transfer market etc) gives confidence that they will challenge for trophies next year. Infact Wenger should be very afraid, someone may come knocking for Vermalean!

Benitez with his 5 players dream should account for all the players (save for Torres, Mascherano, Benayoun) that he brought in. Wapi result? His sounds more like an excuse.

The market has not started to overheat. I think after the world cup, player values will soar especially for fringe players who have a good showing and are injury-free. I think managers could be cautious now not to pay highly only for the player to be injured in the world cup and miss the rest of the season.
