When the fire started on the second floor of the 27 floor building, residents were told to stay put in their flats and put wet towels below their doors.....as per the building's fire safety policy/procedures. Then the fire spread to the whole building. And hundreds were trapped in their homes since it was too late escape.

Surely that "stay put policy" is devoid of any common sense and has lead to many many deaths.

Quote:
Eyewitnesses said they saw lights - thought to be mobile phones or torches - flashing at the top of the block of flats, and trapped residents coming to their windows - some holding children from windows.

Eyewitness Jody Martin said: "I watched one person falling out, I watched another woman holding her baby out the window... hearing screams.
"I was yelling at everyone to get down and they were saying 'We can't leave our apartments, the smoke is too bad on the corridors.'"
Michael Paramaseevan, who lives on the seventh floor with his girlfriend and young daughter, said he ignored official advice to stay in your home.
"If we had stayed in that flat, we would've perished. My gut instinct told me just to get the girls out. I wrapped the little one up because of the smoke and I just got them out."

We were/are not bothered with the collapse of the 7 storey building in Embakasi where 15 lives are still unaccounted for yet we are more concerned with a burning building in London.

Being in the building industry I am Following closely on how the fire spread so fast, building flaws eg the garbage chutes can channel smoke upstairs.
That policy is so bad, even in small fires everyone should go outside to the fire assembly point, we use British building code in Kenya and it has some flaws eg.
-open staircases in ideal situations you should open a door to the access to the staircase.
-garbage chutes should automatically close when fire alarm goes off.
-Have dry and wet risers, swimming pool acts as a fire fighting tank.
-for 10 floors and above, have a fire proofed floor in the middle for those unable to use the staircase all the way down.
-switch of central air conditioning
-pioed gas and electric power switched off

This is the building layout. With such a floor layout, the stair case area acts like a fire chimney funneling the fire and smoke huko juu....
