If my memory serves me right, I overheard someone say that Nairobi's water table does not permit underground construction, thats why there's no tunnel rail. Those who are conversant with this geological phenomenon will tell you that. I know for sure that the city of Nairobi and its environs is a water conservation area, the area was gazetted as a conservation area under the terms of the water ordinance act way back in 1951 by the British colonial government.

@Obi Kanobi, you dont get mud and water pools in a modern city. No potholes on pathways, grass is well patched and the roads are paved. You have walk ways for those who choose to walk/run and the right infrastructure to move from point A to B. Tall buildings are just that....Tall buildings.

And now Hass Group of Companies kicks off the construction of the third Hilton hotel in Nairobi.. 66 floors

I read somewhere that the occupancy of the UAP tower is 30%(well may be it has improved since the story was written).So how will these other yet to be completed towers fare?

Is there a need (need, not demand) for tall buildings in Nairobi/Kenya? Do we have a shortage of space to warrant going up?

Land is too costly in Nairobi....a low total space/acre or ha. ratio would not make long term economic sense....so up they creep towards the skies
More baffling, at least to me is why most of the investment is going to real estate...no one wants to build a factory? An ultra-modern farming enterprise? All the money raided from county coffers and kickbacks....flats...hotels...office blocks..
We'll become a nation of towering, shiny glass edifices with no tenants and crumbling from the inside while food security is a problem and we are importing even basic finished goods which we can manufacture here

In order to create economic density a city needs to grow vertically not horizontally. It's not a shortage of space but rather urban economics where you create more economic benefits by locating businesses and residents near each other. E.g. if our CBD was built up tall with residential units at the top then you create the mythical 24 hour economy but our CBD is usually dead by 9pm
