FEDEX, NHS and companies in nearly 100 other countries Quote:A large-scale cyberattack affected nearly one hundred countries and held tens of thousands of computers ransom throughout the day on Friday.
Antivirus provider Avast reported that at least 75,000 computers had been infected by the crippling malware and that the "WanaCrypt0r 2.0," as it is called, ransomware had been detected in 99 countries.
More than a dozen hospitals in England and major companies, including FedEx and Spain's largest telecom, were targeted Friday.
"The scale of it — that's pretty unprecedented," Ben Rapp, the CEO of IT support company Managed Networks,

Ransomware is bad really bad. Even if you pay the ransom the will not give you the decryptor. Best way to deal with it is to have multiple backups of your documents, strong endpoint protection and user training.

you will curse forever when that Secretary enables macros on that word document and gets the infected with ransomware.ransomware is really bad no cure for it.it will be nice to see how much this cybergang collects in their bit coin account via blockchain.info.i am sure its millions. i read they are charging 300 dollars to decrypt the file.looks like its like it was made to infect computers with a know vulnerability (the nsa exploits) because typically when ransomware attacks it just encrypt the computer that it infects not.interesting times you could have guessed this high profile companies have the latest tech to fend of such attacks.

Its so bad that some hospitals have now been taken back to using pen and paper. All records have been encrypted. If you had surgery scheduled you're asked to go back home and wait. The sad thing is, its very difficult to get the perpetrators. Terrible If you get a message from windows asking you to approve updates, please do it, its very very necessary. If you get a message from windows asking you to approve updates, please do it, its very very necessary. ha! What? Say that again. Ati windows updates...Just start that sentence again. Surgery and windows don't go together... If I have surgery on Sunday, it's surgery on Sunday...Whether I've been hacked or not. This is a problem of managers thinking that IT can solve their laziness. Come on~~ Hacking is life as it is....Doesn't mean that you go digital then yoiu forget to deal with the issues... Or maybe that's Jubilee's issue...Gave soooooo much money to Alai, they forgot to pay for the doctor. Hackers are not the problem. You ar!!! Thieves are not good people. Tumeelewana?

If you get a message from windows asking you to approve updates, please do it, its very very necessary. Why can't they restore customer records from backup. It doesn't make sense at all! Do doctors depend on computers to do surgery?? Reflection Eternal

Do doctors depend on computers to do surgery?? Most hospitals are behind in technology so it is not shocking that they may not have an upto date backup. They still use Windows XP which Microsoft stopped supporting eons "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear. If you get a message from windows asking you to approve updates, please do it, its very very necessary. Why can't they restore customer records from backup. It doesn't make sense at all! Do doctors depend on computers to do surgery?? 1. Using Windows XP is a disaster happening. No one should be using this OS today. 2. When this malware spreads it hits hardest where there are the weakest it. Systems. For one using xp they probably are backing up on the same machines or have no backup plan at all meaning the backups, if they are there are encrypted and never going to be accessible again. 3. The small break is that the spread of this malware has been contained - for now. Providing a window of opportunity to update OS's or probably move to open source alternatives 4. This will probably come in waves with the amount of 'tools' released by the #shadowbrokers thanks to micro$oft and a myriad of baked in vulnarabilities in their OS Anyway, the usual tips will keep you safe.. for now: - keep your computers upto date (os and antivirus/antimalware programs) - avoid opening unsolicited files - for daily use, avoid using computers logged in as administrator or with admin level privileges. - good luck Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It would be a miracle if no Kenyan company is affected "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear. The problem is you hope when you should fear & fear when you should hope: - Jesse Livermore .

Question: Since this attack is on Windows, is Microsoft giving it's users the latest windows upgrade for free? If they are not then would it be wise to conclude that they are the originators of this virus for a profit? .... just thinking aloud... BBI will solve it :)

Writing a virus so as to later hawk a solution is a terrible idea. The proceeds would never cover the damage done to the brand, not to mention its probably illegal. To be fair, Microsoft does a decent job of plugging loopholes; it is organizations who couldn't be bothered to keep up implementing the rigorous update schedule cause it is a hassle and costs some money...same goes for individual users who don't have bandwidth to keep downloading hundreds of megs of updates or the IT skill...until disaster strikes. You could use Linux..then see your productivity drop by 50% ...in general..(leave Linux to programmers and IT experts and enthusiasts).....or Mac OS...and pay an arm and a leg for hardware and software. Keep your Windows machines updated people, its the simplest and most painless of the options available right now

When you upgrade from Toyota Corolla to Rav4 do you get it for free? When Microsoft software engineers discover vulnerabilities, they dispatch a patch which prompts you the user to either update immediately or after 4 hrs etc. These updates are automatic but you will have to restart your computer. Some people (with admin privileges) block the updates because they find it a waste of time - waiting for the comp to install patches and reboot. Others keep pushing it. Upgrades e.g from windows xp to windows 7 aren't free (most of the time - sometimes there is a limited offer to upgrade for free) Updates to the existing software are free and plug some of the exploited vulnerabilities. People should download and install these updates especially those marked security updates. Unfortunately that is too much to do for many people till a situation like we currently have Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

In addition, it is thought that some users do not update sometimes or oftentimes - because of cost - and thus themselves become fertile ground for unknowingly 'propagating' nuisances like malware etc.

Round 2. CNN wrote:Hackers launched blistering ransomware attacks Tuesday against companies and agencies across the world, particularly targeting Ukranian businesses. Major global firms reported that they had been targeted, including British advertising agency WPP (WPPGY), Russian oil and gas giant Rosneft and Danish shipping firm Maersk.
"IT systems in several WPP companies have been affected by a suspected cyber attack," WPP said on its Twitter account.
Maersk issued a similar statement, saying its tech systems "are down across multiple sites and business units due to a cyberattack."
The U.S.-based pharmaceutical company Merck (MRK) also said it was hit. "We confirm our company's computer network was compromised today as part of global hack," Merck said on Twitter.
The source of the attack is not yet clear. It is similar to WannaCry, which spread globally in May, but there are differences. Both asked victims to pay Bitcoin to get their files back, and both use a similar flaw to spread through networks.
Telegraph wrote:Major firms, airports and government departments in Ukraine have been struck by a massive cyber attack which began to spread across Europe on Tuesday afternoon.
In Ukraine, government departments, the central bank, a state-run aircraft manufacturer, the airport in Kiev and the metro network have all been paralysed by the hack. A Boeing production plant in Charleston, South Carolina was hit by the WannaCry ransomwear cyberattack on Wednesday, according to a report from the Seattle Times. Mike VanderWel, the chief engineer at Boeing Commercial Airplane production engineering, sent out a company-wide memo calling for “all hands on deck.” "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear.
