I attended a seminar and we were about 700 pastors with their spouses from different denominations in Kenya. Its was not a 'No' strategitic plan but was organised to encourage the servants of God.From the open discussions we had,I could feel how mistreated this men and women were and how the today's kenyan society dont value pastors.I have being asking this question what if there are no genuine pastors in kenya ? or there is no a spiritual person in your life or in your family ?would you have a normal life...

A survey done in 2009

* 1,500 pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, contention in churches, or spiritual burnout.
* 30 percent of pastors will be divorced by the time they leave the ministry.
* 80 percent of pastors and 84 percent of spouses feel discouraged or unqualified in their roles as pastors.
* 50 percent are so discouraged they would leave if they could but have no other way to make a living.
* Four out of five seminary and Bible school grads who enter the ministry will leave it in the first five years after graduation.
* 80 percent of spouses feel their spouse is over-worked. 80 percent wish their husbands would leave the ministry.
* 80 percent of pastors’ wives say the most destructive event that ever occurred in their marriage and family was the day they entered ministry.
* 70 percent of pastors fight depression.
* 20 percent have had an extramarital affair since starting ministry.
* 70 percent of pastors say that the only time studying the Word is when they are preparing a sermon.

Pastors are essential members of the society and I have to say, its very sad to read this statistics. If there were no pastors in Kenya, we would probably all find another religion eg islam or cultural practises.

as for why they lost credibility. I have my own reason why I don't trust them.

A few years ago when Kenyans were suffering under some hardliner of a president, most of them were quite comfortable saying nothing as they accepted tithe. A few years ago when people were killing each other, they went back to their tribal cocoons for or against one of the principals. When they joined politics, it was obvious that they were just as willing to rig as the politician. Is that good enough?

I remember the days of Muge, Gitari, Njoya, Okullu, and Wamugunda. These were the only clergy to stand up and fight against a regime only too willing to throw you out the window. Forget the present day clergy that pretend that they faught for anyone's rights. The 4 above were persecuted by the gov't, and the church in the same measure.

Some of the above mentioned were even sacked, banned or dumped from their own churches.

In the end, the church became a part of the regime. Happy with the status quo and not willing to change the lives of Kenyans. That is why some don't believe that pastors can die and even have virgils to ressurect them. Talk about an ego problem!

Are they going through the same process now? Yes. We are back to the "world is flat and we shall call anyone who doesn't say so a heretic" days.

Pastor M

The Kenyan clergy has proved to Kenyans time and again that they are only too willing to keep the status quo and will only throw their weight behind a cause when there is money to be made and when their property is under attak. In other words, they have become the new political class.

Oh how I wish Muge, and Okullu were around.

If there are no more pastors in Kenya as the above, then we are in very serious trouble.

I admire your brutal honesty. That is if you are a pastor. My take is that at the end of the day a pastor, a monk or a sheikh is a MAN. Anyone banking on any religion based on the leader of the religion and not personal conviction is bound to fall into problems. If you are in Catho because of the pope's goodness, hauwesmek.

@Njunge, Prophet Odongo had just come from the dominican republic and prophesied Doom and Earth Quake over that Area the Guys of Dominican Republic repented in large numbers their Voodoo Neighbors didn't. when the Quake came!!!
He visited then visited Chile after that and did the same prophesy and guess what? you know what happend.
Haiti was a nation of 70% Catholics , 30% Protestants and 100% Voodoo - their day of reckoning came.
It is true the dudes swore a pact with the prince of darkness to get rid of their Colonial masters in 1791.
But the truth is that Jesus Said that the world would hate his disciples as it hated him.

I admire my pastor thank you very much. So cannot speak too much about what others should expect from theirs.

If after years of theology class a pastor cannot know the difference between being a compass, a leader and rabble rouser, then therein lies the problem.

We can't have a political party full of pastors. I am sorry, that is not the intention of tithing.

You as a pastor do remember the days of the Katakwa diocese. If you do, then that is the time you lost all direction.

@Njunge, Google what that fellow says about black people and Katrina. Sometimes I wonder if our clergy even reads. Anyone involved with that fellow to me is just as dangerous as a truck hitting a mini.

Being a pastor is a calling. However, in Kenya, being a pastor is the surest way to untaxed riches. At least, that is what we see.

So what do you expect the poor man in Kibera to think when he takes his 10 bob to the pastor who quickly takes that money to buy a new suit and start running for parliament?

@Njunge I just couldn't resist Pat Robertson

I am sorry Pastor to hijack your thread but this is the fear that some of us will not tell you. This is where we are seeing the clergy heading.

Honestly its rather scary to think that the person financing the clergy and their no vote is the same person who has said the following things.

(talking about apartheid South Africa) "I think 'one man, one vote,' just unrestricted democracy, would not be wise. There needs to be some kind of protection for the minority which the white people represent now, a minority, and they need and have a right to demand a protection of their rights."--Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club," 3/18/92

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don't have to be nice to them."--Pat Robertson, The 700 Club, January 14, 1991

"I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good...Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a Biblical duty, we are called by God, to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism."--Randall Terry, Founder of Operation Rescue, The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 8-16-93

I'm I wrong thinking that the Kenyan clergy is on the wrong track. I don't think so. But that's only my view.

I like it when you put it I admire my pastor that means you take of him by tithing, you respect him, meaning that your pastor is like Muge or Okullu as you said earlier.
what I m trying to drive home is:
1)God has his agents (servants) in Kenya and we should never abuse them, mock them.we might find ourselves in serious conflict with God.
2)We have genuine pastors in Kenya and we should listen to them and even when they warn us.They are the Voice of God to you.
3)Pastors are human beings just like you they make mistakes
4)Pastors have needs, problems and ambitions just like you and me
5)Yes there are fake pastors from the time of Jesus Matthew 24:11, saying, “Many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.”Its up to you to know the genuine and the fake this is by their fruits.
6)We should encourage the pastors because Kenyan society cannot go far without them and even think of yourself and your family can you do without someone pastoring you ?(pastor or a Imam)

Pastor M, apart from whining about how pastors with their pajeros have got it bad, what is the point of this thread?
Shouldn't we be having one from the folk in Gikomba about how tough it is to make a living in that market? Or maybe one from our tea-accepting cops about how hard it is chasing criminals in Kenya?

- God does speak to his pple thro his agents (clergy)- remember God is not contradictory!. Herein lies the problem, the clergy never speak the same voice; I Am particulary skeptical (and not maliciously) of pastors.
- The ministry is a calling - not a business venture for profit motive!. I have no problem at all for a man of cloth living a modest life... but I do have a problem when they live lavishly at the expense of the faithfuls - why can't they use the extra coin to pull out the masses from poverty (To this end I have alot of respect for the catholic church although Am not catholic).
- While I agree that there are Pastors with a noble motive of delivering souls to God; you have also got to agree that the most visible ones also happen to be the "rotten apples" (no malice intended). The have set all the bad precedents; fake exosisms, soiling hands in politics, blatant greed for wealth etc etc.. what are the good pastors doing?
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
