Aside from cheap labor and cheap electricity, I suspect that another reason Ethiopia is attracting a lot of manufacturing is that they are spending a lot on infrastructure. So investors see a a good future there. You need good infrastructure to move goods and information around cheaply.

Kenya is investing in giving Ksh 90m to Mutahi Ngunyi to do his joke audit on NYS, and every memeber of some useless commision is being paid salaries higher than President Obama. And Uhuruto's travel and entertainment budget exceeds ksh 2 billion per year.

Ethiopia recently announced it is to build another dam, named Koysha, after Gibe III, which is the largest of all Ethiopian dams became operational. The Gibe III dam which can generate 1,800 megawatts has faced obstruction challenges by international rights groups and NGOs but was completed with domestic finance to become operational only a few months ago and has now started generating power partially.

Ethiopia declares a 6 month state of emergency after protesters attack foreign businesses including flower farms, factories, hotels etc. Many flower farms razed to the ground. Tourist hotels torched. 450 protesters killed. Pity Kenyan flower growers who "abused" Kenya and went to Ethiopia praising it's "business-friendliness". The grass is not always greener on the other side. Also, the greenness may be due to a leaking sewer.

Sad......karibu Kenya where hakuna matata.

Quote:
Esmeralda Farms said its 10 million euro ($11.1m) investment went up in smoke this week in Bahir Dar city and that several other horticulture companies were also affected.

Remco Bergkamp, assistant manager at Esmeralda Farms in the Netherlands, told Al Jazeera that the company would probably leave Ethiopia, rather than rebuild the farm.

"The situation is not stable enough to run a business. You just don’t know where the country is headed," Bergkamp told Al Jazeera.

"The government sent security forces to protect the farm. Eventually the group of protesters grew so large that the soldiers were forced to flee and the property was torched," Bergkamp said.

Riots in Kenya happen every election year

Business Daily wrote:
The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest statistical estimates indicate that Ethiopia’s gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to grow from $61.62 billion in 2015 to $69.21 billion this year, narrowly beating Kenya’s output which is expected to rise from $63.39 billion to $69.17 billion over the same period.

“Ethiopia has experienced double-digit economic growth, averaging 10.8 per cent since 2005, which has mainly been underpinned by public-sector-led development,” the African Development Bank, the OECD Development Centre and the United Nations Development Programme say in the latest African Economic Outlook report.

Kenya’s GDP of $14.1 billion in 2000 was 71.6 per cent larger than Ethiopia’s $8.23 billion in the same year but the Horn of Africa nation has closed the economic gap in the last five years of robust growth.

The IMF’s GDP estimates are based on current market prices using exchange rates prevailing between July 22 and August 19.

That could be the case (blame baba) but we only attack each other, not chasing away foreign investors and burning down their factories, investments. Ethiopia is kaput. No investor will want to venture there.

Ethiopia is a powder keg ready to explode. I do not understand how the people in the oldest african christian civilisation (ethiopia and eritrea) allow their rulers to oppress them.

It would be fair to make mention of Prophet Muhammad pbuh interaction with one of the greatest kings of his time, one whose piety served as a greater source of prosperity for his people than any kind of wealth, privilege or power... The Abyssinia king (A.D.615-616) who would not tolerate injustice...

The prophet permitted some of his followers to migrate to seek asylum in Abyssinia, he knew there was a king, Negus, a Christian, was a just ruler, one that would do no wrong to those that lived in his kingdom. His people sneaked out of Makkah in the darkness of the night and headed for the sea where two boats were to sail to Abyssinia...

NOTE: Please do not turn this into a religious argument. I'm just going back to history to recognize former just kings of Ethiopia.

Civil rights are restricted and the security agencies are only too willing to crack heads. The situation in Eritrea is even worse where conscription is mandatory and can last for decades.

The problem of growing in economics and ignoring the social aspects. The same issue we have in Kenya. It doesn't matter how well your infrastructure programs are if you ignore the social fabric.

i call it the idolatry of efficiency and progress. I see people talking about Singapore, Benevolent dictatorships e.t.c. Even Gadaffi was a benevolent dictator. You know what works? an open society! I think i once said that people need to differentiate a couple of things
1) Democracy
2) Modernity
3) Freedom
4) Prosperity
They are not always related and some can occur on their own... You know what develops a society? PEOPLE not governments... PEOPLE... Gava just catalyses this development and societies that everyone contributes and feels a part of a great societies.

Why would the ruling Tigrinya wish to cede power? The access to cheap labour and full control over land ownership has worked in their favour.

It's only mandatory once you complete their high school equivalent and lasts for a year-I think it is their NYS equivalent of the 80's
