Another piece of trivia is - Pirates used to actually have the eye patch... but were not mono eyed. they wore an eye patch so that their one eye was accustomed to darkens and when fighting on the hull they would see with the uncovered eye and as soon as they pushed you to the inside (bridge?) and there was darkness (limited light) they would switch the patch from one eye to another and the one that was covered would see better than the one that was not. Unless one is washing a white car on a sunny day, the effect of moving from sun to shade is negligible as the eye quickly adjusts.

Reminds me a time we went on strike back in high school, it was at night and when the cops came they fired a ka flare up in the sky, woe unto all the students who looked up and caught the explosion, before your eyes managed to come back to normality in the darkness the cops had clobbered you senseless.
