Helb ties loans to payment by defaulting parents

...the transfer of the funds to their accounts will be delayed until their parents resume payment of the loans...

What are Kenyans breathing?

d'oh! d'oh! d'oh!

But
Helb chief executive officer Charles Ringera said a number of parents who are loan defaulters had stood as guarantors to their children seeking the loans.

This is very unconstitutional, let me run to high court for stay orders pending interpretation smile

As a former (and very repentant) HELB defaulter, I must say I am really impressed by the way Ringera is going after defaulters.

In fact I would like to propose that Uhuruto make Ringera the next commissioner of KRA. Who is with me?

I have never understood how, or why guys default, especially those with some form of income, I mean the interest rates for helb are low, and they allow one to pay small amounts, that said I find it absurd to 'deny' a needy kid a loan just because the parent did not pay up, that's just crazy, what next they will start stripping of a persons citizenship or not issueing and ID because the parents failed to pay up helb.

Ths issue arose because of having quite a large number of defaulters acting as guarantors. Thus the chances of their children defaulting is equally high.

"Last year, out of 34,000 applicants for loans that we received, 16,000 parents guaranteed their children, of the 16,000, we discovered that 6,000 were loan defaulters"

Sad , it does not matter, your parent is not you, and they should not use your parents character to dictate how your loan is processed. Sad

But your defaulting parent is a Guarantor it matters to HELB!!!

if you read the article,

Quote:
“We will not deny the students loans since they are entitled to it but in case of defaulting parents we will demand that they start to repay their loans or commit as a condition of releasing funds to their children,” said Mr Ringera.

it seems they are punishing students for their parents sins, plus why accept a guarantor then after issuing the loan punish the student
