I am schedule to go to Diani on assignment next week. I plan to drive down and enjoy the countryside. But there are two nagging problems:

[1] the section from Mikindani to Mombasa town
[2] the Ferry crossing at Likoni

These two places combined can easily increase you journey time by 6 hours!

So i am thinking of going around them this way: branch off at Mazeras and take the road to Kinango. Drive all the way to Shimba Hills; then to Kwale and down to the Likoni-Ukunda road and onwards to Diani.

I always see this road on my car-road-map but I don't know its condition. I know from Kwale downwards is fairly good tarmac but what about the rest of it?

Or is there another way to avoid the two sticky jams?

better use the normal road, mikindani - mombasa town then pick a ferry to likoni/south coast

shimba hills road is worst now especially due to the rains.

Opt for it only if you are ready for the thrill and if you have a serious 4WD vehicle

Better the devil you know...
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

Has anyone used this road of late ? I saw promises made for the road to be done in 2014 but i can't get any update on the same.
