The big question is, do you foresee this happening with these gated communities from the likes of Suraya etc?

@alba Jomo Kenyatta is NOT to blame for the mess in nairobi. When he died in 1978 he left what the world used to call "the green city in the sun". It was a city where you could even go window shopping at tom mboya street, river road at midnight. He even left a working public transport system and buses used to run on time, even at night. He left beautiful well planned estates even in eastlands eg buru buru, umoja, donholm etc with playgrounds, social halls etc. Then Moi took over and everything went haywire.
I agree with some of your assessment. Nairobi really went haywire under Moi. His administration did most of the damage in terms of apportioning public land to well connected individuals. Perhaps the worst thing Moi did was disbanding the Nairobi city council and replacing it with Nairobi city commission so that Nairobians could no longer elect the mayor or any Councillors. But it must be said that the land grabbing culture started with Kenyatta and we still haven't stopped. Now that there is not much land left to grab, schools are the next target.

@Hardwood i didn´t say that we blacks are stupid, what i said is that sometimes am tempted to think .we are stupid. Picture this, Whenever a proffession goes back home, where s/he grew up, people tend to come and see them ,not to ask them on how one can help them with ideas that they have gathered over the years but with Chapaa ya lunch. The last time i was home, some few men asked me for something kidogo, i gave them 5K but they were disappointed ,that i didn´t give them 50k. Surely, i just can´t give anyone that much cash, bearing in mind am not a politician. I hussled my way alone to go and study abroad. Instead of this men coming to ask me of ways their sons and daughters could also study abroad, you don´t have to be rich to study in most of the european countries, they care alot about handouts.Next time am around, i will definately not meet them. They have lost out on Information that i could give them free of charge, It is such kind of behaviour that i ask myself if we are stupid generally. If you go to Asian countries, there is almost zero crime. however, in countries with black population, one gets really scared of their life

I have lived and interacted with Junguz for long , though am sure there might be some wazuans who have done so longer than me. However i disagree with anyone who says us blacks are stupid bla bla. What we lack is organization.Look at yourself, around yourself and you will see the fruits of lack of organisation.Where i live, there are businesses that cannot be operated within some defined distance.Say you have a press kiosk every 500M, the municipal councils have put into place laws that say a kiosk, pharmacy, bakery etc should not be at a distance say 2Kms apart. In that case there will be no fighting over customers.I usually work early and find guys cleaning the streets as early as 4am.When people go to work at 7 or 8, the streets are already clean and you will not even see the cleaners.Routine schedules for say maintaining small stuff like flower beds have been done. These are simple things and they are the basis of any organized society. Look at Nairobi, when is the cleaning done? when are the dust bins emptied ? how are the shops/kiosks /house construction permits allocated ? This starts from your home to the highest office. You are paid your salary and the first thing you do is drink a chunk at the beginning of the month and come 20th you are already waiting for the advance.
There are very bright black people out there and i think the key word is organization.
Sad for Buru some parts look like Huruma.

Mike Ock wrote:The big question is, do you foresee this happening with these gated communities from the likes of Suraya etc? If you have bought a house. Form a nyumba kumi kind of organization with the other home owners and create a memorandum of understanding where you have agreements on how you want your estate to be maintained. Make these rules bound by law and ensure that every new owner abides by them. No kiosks (why do Kenyans have to open so many of them) no extensions, unplanned developments eg funny looking gates etc. If you all what your property to appreciate, you need to all agree on how to maintain it. Sad for Buru some parts look like Huruma. lack of organization might symbolize stupidity, otherwise how else can you explain the lack of willingness or ability to do those simple things. or how would you explain an inteligent black man leaving his poor country to go get accommodation and develop some foreign rich mans land

Just seen on 9pm news Membley residents protesting and bringing down a flat being put up in their estate. Residents associations need to be empowered to prevent such ujinga by greedy developers. If the estate regulations say only one family home can be put up on a plot that's it. If someone wants to put up flats, they can sell the plot and go buy land elsewhere and build flats in an area where they are allowed.

Intelligence is not about regurgitating facts,it is about applying what you have learned abd this is where most africans fail. Africans use their education to intimidate others. Some problems i see in Africa can be solved easily without employing much resources. An African is still behind regardless of their richness and educational achievement. Simple planning is a problem. You rarely find intelligent stimulating discussions on our Tv's. Our celebrities are akothee's,Prezo,Alai,Sidika, etc

Most people think public green spaces are a waste of space, in Nairobi, if you are in your ka-flat and you want to soak in some sun, your options are limited, you can't seat at the road side you'll look like a mad idler, you can't go in a school ground you'll look like a pedophile, you dont want to go to Uhuru park that's mamboch,s space, so you either go to your local built on a road reserve. In those gated Estates you all want, teens are trapped, kids can play on the streets what about the teens, when chamas come home teens either hide in their bedrooms or go to base where other teens eat miraa whistle at passing ladies, start doing drugs etc, our social hall are now only rental, churches only open their grounds to paid events or on Sundays only. In short we don't have public areas in our residential areas so bars and clubs are the new public spaces, where you have to buy to stay. To Each His Own
