The workers union representing a majority of Kenya Airways employees has said it does not anticipate further retrenchments at the national carrier following Friday’s sacking of 80 staff. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union, whose membership comprises about 2,500 KQ staffers, says the airline’s management has agreed to limit the number of sacked employees significantly below the initial estimate of 600. I said 300 earlier... so many guys have resigned many more poached by Emirates...currently the important departments like ground services are understaffed if they sack 600 people it will be chaos galore.Plus no pilot is being retrenched so... Sad state of affairs...another 50 from inflight sent home. @maka, Do you know if the managers responsible for fuel procurement inefficiencies were among the first batch of 80? They are going departmental wise exercise will end on Thursday so will get to know from finance who went...kesho ground services. possunt quia posse videntur

It may not be a big number since sinking 10 billion from a loan in a retrenchment exercise is counterproductive in the long run as this guy from Ernest & Young puts it.

The management needs to weigh all options very well as it will be expensive in the long run even if the loan is guaranteed by the treasury. They should consider the fact that the Company is already indebted.

Let us bite the one off costs They will still need to hire in the near future when the business environment improves. It is evident the tourism industry is picking up. The retrenchment in 2012 led to new hires. The initial investment going to this exercise is very high and recouping it will take a while even if the manpower costs now are reduced. The interest element/ finance cost is the killer. It adds a burden to the existing finance costs.
