Obi 1 Kanobi wrote:Lolest! wrote:Quote:No nation in the history of the world has successfully developed economically while under democratic rule. I believe that Kenya is taking the well trodden path of liberalization without restraint which characterized much of 1990's former soviet bloc states (not development) but integration in to European markets without the development of and support for home grown industry. Which led those countries to focus mostly on consumption of foreign produced goods while the profits those companies made were expatriated to foreign shareholders in the form of dividends (not a viable development path). Ethiopia on the other hand is following the more successful statist model like South Korea, Japan, and more recently China have pursued to great effect. Of course I'm not at all surprised that the Economist magazine would fall on the side of established Western capital interests. Why increase the competition right? From the comments in that article Silly comment, I could argue that Germany, US, Canada, UK, Israel, Japan, Australia,South Korea, India, France, Italy, Norway, Finland, have done ok under democracy. The book 'Why Nations Fail' also posits that it's freedom and liberty and liberalisation of economies that makes countries sustainably prosperous.

But as that is unlikely to happen, I hope those who have not take advise from those who have been there.
Word,, Ethiopia is still a sh*t hole, picture Kenya in the 90's under Mo1, nuff said. I agree with Obi 1 Kanobi. let people travel to Ethiopia first before they praise the few projects they keep praising. I have driven from Addis towards Djibouti and Somali border. What I saw is high level of poverty. Kenya is very ahead

Quote: Many contemporary critiques of American civilization are anticipated by that of Charles Dickens, who as England's celebrated novelist and democratic reformer first visited the United States in 1842, early in his career. Dickens' account of the visit, American Notes, was one of the first British viewpoints to demonstrate that an Englishman did not have to be an aristocrat to distrust the American rhetoric. Dickens charged Americans with incivility, arrogance, anti-intellectualism, a predilection for violence, and hypocrisy, particularly about anti-democratic policies such as slavery. Ethiopia? add them 20 years, and subtract their Moi = where we were in 2013. Rwanda should effectively be competing with Machakos county.

If you have decent cash Kigali, Dar, Kampala, Adis, Nairobi are nice towns to live in, but go to the poor rural areas in all the regional countries and its appalling. ati kenya tuko mbele, mbele gani if going to a public hospital is staring death in the face, children in public schools still study under trees, malaria is still a killer, and death during childbirth is still a big concern, jiggers are still a big issue, not only for select individuals but whole areas. Kenya iko mbele to those who live in gated estates, with medical insurance cover, and private security, coupled with private education for their kids.
