Hello guys,

Modern Bee Farmers (MBF) is a local firm that has been providing beekeeping solutions in Kenya for the last 10 years.

We have modern Langstroth hives as well as KTBH (Kenya Top Bar Hives) yes, Kenya has an internationally known hive named after the nation.

Bee Keeping is slightly different from other agricultural activities in terms of labor input compared to the level of output generated. However there are obviously several factors that have hindered the growth of the industry despite it being rated as having potential of growing to a multi-billion shilling industry
http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/m/story.php?articleID=2000098062&story_title=Earning-big-from-beekeeping-with-less-than-Sh100-000

I have grown up with bees since i was 7 years old that is more than 20 years ago, my dad had bees in Zimmerman Estate and you can imagine how congested the estate is, yet no one in our flat ever got stung. We got honey and sold to not only the neighbors but to the nearby shops due to the assurance that the honey was never doctored hence we could easily charge a premium for this guarantee
The myth that bees are always hostile is greatly exaggerated, bees defend their hives only if they feel threatened, agitating them unnecessarily is something to avoid if you wish to become a commercial bee keeper

The MATH
A hive cost 4,500 with the honey harvesting kit going for 5,500. So lets say an initial investment of 10 hives and a single kit comes to 50,500.
Honey is harvested 3-4 times annually
A single hive produces 10-15KGs depending on several factors
(however 3 women groups is central kenya are doing it remarkably well and have surpassed this margin) for these calculations we'll use 3 harvest periods annually, and 10KG as the average return per hive

The retail price for honey is 600 for 1Kg of processed honey.

So 10 hives give 100Kgs per harvest so annually this comes to a minimum of 300KG. At Ksh 600 Per Kilogram this gives an annual return of Ksh 180,000/=

The difference between bee keeping and lets say Having a grade cow is that Bees DO NOT require any sort of feeding from you or even a vet because they got sick. They are self reliant and need no input from our side smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile
