I checked my CFC account recently and saw some figures that I can't seem to understand how they derived at. What does "Market Portfolio Value after Haircut" mean? I calculated the brokerage fee, transaction charges and withholding tax but couldn't come up with the same figure. Can someone please explain how they come up with that amount? Knowledge is contagious...Infect truth!

A haircut, in the financial industry, is a percentage discount that's applied informally to the market value of a stock or the face value of a bond in an attempt to account for the risk of loss that the investment poses. So, for example, a stock with a market value of 100 may get a haircut of 20%, to 80, when an analyst or money manager tries to anticipate what is likely to happen to the price. Haircut is the value of your shares after a discount to cover price variation risk and in developed markets, this is max. value of security/collateral your shares can cover. If your shares are worth 1,000,000/= actual value and 750,000/= after haircut, it means that (in a developed/mature market) you can use those shares to secure a 750,000/= loan. In Kenya, simply ignore the figure. No one ever uses it! Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

While others are at the level of Dr. Opus Dei and Jimnah Mbaru others are just beginning and many, many more are in between. And everyone started at the bottom unless of course there is ONE fellow (guess whom!) who was born knowing what a haircut is (Either the one given by a barber or the financial one!!) The valuation after haircut is normally used on instances when one is borrowing funds against the security so as to guard the lender against market fluctuations and is at times based on the spread or in developed markets when dealing in futures this is the amount that is normally locked in though the true amount or value locked is the market value. Most markets use 25%. So don't get worried in any way the true value of your portfolio is 120k and not 103k, its just helping you know how much you can get on your portfolio as a security for any financing or the much you can lose on the basis of the spread. Meaning I can take a loan to the value of my haircut? Simply, a hair cut is the difference between market value and dues expected upon a forced-sell.It depends on your assets' liquidity as well as market behaviour (eg. buy and sell volumes, price ranging/trending) The broker gives a 17k haircut, he is informing @Impunity that in terms of immediate liquidity his 120k shares are worth 103k. ie " if you need cash urgently, we think we can get you 103k chap chap."This is just the broker's valid opinion. Also, in my own opinion, if @Impunity went to a bank to borrow against his shares, they may give him a 40% hair cut and lend him 70-75k against the shares. Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
