On my last visit to OilLibya Waiyaki Way, I requested an oil check. After filling with 1ltr, the guy came round with the dipstick and said, 'inataka tuongeze ingine'.

When I came round and suggested we first check again, I became suspicious after he stalled, ostensibly to let the oil settle. Sure enough, second check showed oil four levels higher.

Now when we came to the engine coolant, he poured in everything as discussed, but the price of 600/= seemed a tad high. I asked for the lubes price list - none available. When I asked for the incharge, I was shown a questionable guy who wouldn't state the price until he was given guidance by my attendant!

So on speaking to third and fourth attendant price became 500/=.
This Nairobi, d'oh! is it only me?

Seems like some stations do not pay their workers well.

i dont know Muganda,

i filled my coolant today at oil libya on waiyaki way for 700/- 1liter . what volume was the coolant you bought.I had questions in my mind so i asked for a receipt which read 700/- so it maybe that this is the price of coolant at petrol stations which are way pricer than buying the same at Nakumatt for example.

@Tmase, thank you for your reply - you prove my extortion claim.

My coolant was 1ltr and I paid 500/= and obtained a receipt. I guess oil stations don't use content of receipt book for accounting for their fuel and lubes.

Anyway, I also went to other OilLibya stations and confirmed the proper price is 500/=. In fact a check in Kenol gave the same amount.

Maybe you should address the bigger problem. A well maintained car should not require any oil topup at all. If you are topping with a whole litre (assuming the previous service put enough oil) then there is a major problem with the car.

@Gordon Gekko
The issue here is coolant(not engine oil) whose level does fluctuate in even the best of maintained vehicles. when you buy 1 litre that is the least volume packaged and it does not necessarily mean the entire 1 litre was used. My top up was less than 200mls of coolant.there is one fact you are overlooking when it comes to engine oil. sometimes at service if you are not sure of your engine capacity for oil,there may be an underestimation of oil change especially now that most oil campanies package the 4lt lubes as opposed to the initial 5lt packs.that can explain a 1lt topup in asound car.

@Muganda, just buy coolant from a supermarket - 700/- is a tad bit pricy

With multi-national oil companies leaving, our petrol stations will have no standard in terms of services, products and environmental care.

Do you mean that only multinational oil corporations have the ability to maintain standards?

Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.
