Good people . For the days I have been here , I have seen talent in the site.

Something has been bothering me too much.Let me 'fungua roho yangu'

Whenever I'm called for an interview , I flop .Not because I am not qualified or cannot do the said job,but expressing myself becomes a problem infront of the panel.

This has happened time and again and is badly affecting my career progression and self esteem.I have now developed a phobia for interviews and panic the moment Im called for one.

I know there is a person here who can help me sort out this personality problem.

Are there public speech clubs or interview coaching institutions out there?

@newfarer, I hear people say that when a doctor actually knows your disease, your already cured 65% - so take heart smile

Toastmasters is a club where guys and gals meet to speak publicly. It's not like a traditional class, but more like a group. It has got a couple of chapters - United Kenya Club or Parklands Sports Club etc.

You introduce yourself out loud, speak on the fly to the group on some topics, and make presentations when it's your turn. I'd say it's just what the doctor ordered.

Speech and expression is given so much premium ...yet we know the most eloquent people are non performers....(pay lip service) ...while those with speech impairemnt are in most cases very effective...Look at people like Moses of the bible

Exodus 4: 10

Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, I'm not a good speaker. I've never been a good speaker, and I'm not now, even though you've spoken to me. I speak slowly, and I become tongue-tied easily.

Isaiah 65:17-Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore

Confidence. Thats the cornerstone of making a good account of oneself, speech with friends/ colleagues and public-speaking.
And this confidence comes from mastery of the subject matter under discussion meaning prior research is a must, good grooming so that u r not self-conscious, humour and appropriate body language.

New fara,MADDO in one of his vibonzos once said to overcome his shyness, he imagines everybody else in the audience is naked with only him dressed!!
Now that u r smiling, realise speech is not a matter of life-n-death and inject some apt humour in it too. Goodluck!

I feel you newfarer. It can be a really traumatic experience. Try and relax. If you attend an interview and you are thinking, "this is the most important interview in my life and if I fail my life will collapse" your body tenses up and things don't come out right. It is kind of like riding a bicycle or swimming. You relax enough and the body achieves its own balance. I have had some interviews and the ones where I did best are the ones where I almost didn't care whether they took me or not. I think those are the ones I was really relaxed.

Prepare thoroughly for the interview (know your stuff, good grooming etc) and when you get to the interview room speak from the heart. Be true.

All the best.

...are you shy? Are the type that says to their wives, " Sima taa nitoe nguo turare!!!". For a start try stripping before your wife. Secondly, while still there compose poetry for her on how you gonna ride her that night till she drowns!!!.

...the following day assemble your family together in the evening and give them a lecture on anything...Budget cuts in the house, prepare a sermon of about 20 minutes and deliver to them...

...Move to the village and join the local primary school PTA...or something like that. Try all the time to say something infront of those people...
My friend, you have to start somewhere...simple things... Eventually all those butterflies in the stomach will disappear...!!!
