I hold Mr. Twain in no higher regard than any other common mortal man.
1. Mr Twain's family owned slaves. His uncle John Quarles owned at least 20 slaves and Mr. Twain spent his childhood ingraining a white superiority mentality.
2. To illustrate this mindset, in
Huckleberry Finn, Aunt Sally learns of a steamboat explosion. "Good gracious! anybody hurt?" she asks. "No'm," comes the answer. "Killed a nigger." Aunt Sally replies "Well, it's lucky, because sometimes people do get hurt."
3. He also grieved native Americans who have since prevented a natural landmark being named in his honour because of his views towards them.
Read here.So much for prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness. Give another, not him! We can do this again all over and I won't be tired.
