Jewish_Press: ‘I Was Pope John Paul II’s Girlfriend’ wrote:
The first hint of intimacy between them came in a letter sent from Rome, where Cardinal Wojtyla was attending a meeting of Catholic bishops in the autumn of 1974. He took several of Tymieniecka’s letters with him to answer them “without using the mail.” They are described by him as being “so meaningful and deeply personal, even if they are written in philosophical ‘code.'”
It is quite clear that at one point, around 1976, she declared her feelings for him, because a letter he wrote to her afterwards suggested he was trying hard to make sense of their relationship in Christian terms. He wrote that she was “a gift from God,” and that “if I did not have this conviction, some moral certainty of Grace, and of acting in obedience to it, I would not dare act like this.”

We are used to seeing John Paul in formal papal clothing amid the grandeur of the Vatican, and yet here he is on the ski slopes, wearing shorts on a lake-side camping trip, and, in old age, entertaining privately in his rather sparse-looking living quarters.

Anna-Teresa's husband, Hendrik Houthakker, was a distinguished Harvard economist. After the collapse of communism, he advised John Paul on post-communist economies, and the Pope granted him a papal knighthood in recognition of his services.

They are holding what look like letters and the then-cardinal has a look of confusion on his face. They could be talking about their forbidden love. Or, they could be talking about the weather.
The BBC then teases one of the letter’s salutations. “My dear Teresa, I have received all three letters. You write about being torn apart, but I could find no answer to these words.”

Hardly surprised. The gods did not have celibacy in mind when they equipped humanity with planes and airports.

Carl Bernstein, the veteran investigative journalist of Watergate fame, was the first writer to get some sense of Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka's importance in John Paul's life. He interviewed her for the book His Holiness in the 1990s. "We are talking about Saint John Paul. This is an extraordinary relationship," he says. "It's not illicit, nonetheless it's fascinating. It changes our perception of him."

I have always thought that one of the most ill advised rules of the Catholic church is this celibacy thing. The result is that priests end up in all manner of landing hanky-panky. Many Popes in the middle ages had wives, mistresses and children and even today, many priests have girlfriends. The bible does not forbid marriage in order to serve and I wonder if this revelation will lead to more debate within the church on whether it is time to make celibacy a personal choice for priests. Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

Landing hanky-panky has nothing to do with being married or not. Don't we have married men who are landing all over? Don't we have proof even here in Wazua of married men who are always talking of their mipangos out there?

The bible doesnt forbid premarital sex neither does it limit you to one sex partner after marriage-Lev 18:18, 1 Cor 7:1-2 If Obiero did it, Who Am I?

I still think allowing marriage would have helped, at least with those priests who prey on alter boys Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

Quote:The National Library of Poland disputes that this was a unique relationship. It says it was one of many warm friendships the Pope enjoyed throughout his life.
