Being a headmaster in a poor, conflict ravaged village in Elgeyo Marakwet, William Yego came up with a simple yet very effective solution to keep pupils in school. All upper primary school students would be boarders and parents could pay school fees with whatever they had, maize, beans, ndengu, mangoes, transport services, posho mill services etc. The results; the school has more than doubled the number of pupils going to national schools and in 4 years not a single pupil has dropped out for lack of school fees.

This is just fantastic thinking and execution. So basically, he creates a collection point for all the parents farm produce in the area and soon the bulk buyers come in to buy what is left over buy the kids and everyone wins... That is just awesome. He deserves a Head of State Commendation at the very least. I Think Therefore I Am

Will he get an HSC, or a Burning spear, or whatever it is they dish out at national holidays? I think not, they would rather award akina Duale or Sonko. Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

I love that, some things can only be done in Kenya. I once met sponsors who sponsor primary school kids in Burkinafaso and they were saying ati the school director is asking for money to build toilets after the same sponsors had provided money for classrooms. I told them of the Kenyan case where by the parents will come dig the pit latrines and for those who do not have time or cannot do the job will pay for the mabatis and flooring. I saw such a thing in central. The sponsors like the idea and they communicated the same to the school director. The toilets were done by the parents and within one month they were done. I think there are so many great ideas from Kenya that can work elsewhere very well.
