A VPN is a secured encrypted link or connection between remote computers or networks through the IntInternet. E.g. If you are in China and want to access Facebook, YouTube or Twitter which the Chinese Gov have blocked. Btw, China is known for it's Great Wall of China, well, in IT, it's also know for its Great Firewall of China. A firewall is used to block or control internet traffic, thus them using it to block fb, tw & yt. In China, you will use a VPN to connect you to a proxy server that's located outside the country, which will connect you to fb, tw, yt or any censored site. The Chinese will see packets flowing, but they will not be able to tell their content because you will be in an encrypted network connection (a VPN), connecting you to your remote proxy server.

Another thing, they have even banned encrypted communications, so use it at your own risk. If communication has to be encrypted, they want the decryption key.

If they can detect that you are using encrypted communications and if your IP an be tracked to your location, you can be in trouble. You could get away if you are using public WiFi or something, just make sure that your hardware does not have spyware that reports to someone your identity and what pages you visit and such. You will be shocked with the number of phone apps & games that are Gov sponsored to spy on you.

Other scenarios where you can use a VPN are such as if your ISP has blocked torrents, or if you want to access Netflix from the US, which has a bigger library, unlike the one for Kenya which titles have been removed.

So far, the explanation for a VPN has been using it to bypass restrictions or laws, but a VPN can be used for good too, e.g. to secure remote network connections between branches of a company, e.g banks and their ATM's or allow employees to connect to the company network from home or the road securely.

@osa2 thought that VPN's are used by Safaricom to connect clients who use the corporate mpesa service, Safaricom actually uses another form of access control and encryption.

Certificates and SSL - Secured Socket Layer are employed. That's a story for another day. You just wanted to know about a VPN.
