A friend who currently works in corporate Kenya wants to quit his job. He is around 40 years old, and heavily invested in real estate. He wishes to venture into big business to realize his entrepreneurship dream. He told me that he is tired of being employed and would like to venture and dedicate his effort in managing a business. He intends to venture into any business that would yield a net of 1 million per month, as long as it is not in real estate (real estate has a low return on investment). Which businesses (below 6 million capital), have the potential to yield his target income, assuming he will manage the business personally and dedicate 100% of his time? Any wazuan here who has figures of 1) Busy nightclub in Westlands, Town or the suburbs? 2) A petrol station? 3)A fast food restaurant in town? ....what are the approximate figures for such establishments? Any other establishments that cross your mind?

Tell your friend to keep his job. Entrepreneurship is lot for everyone.
The quick gain he is looking for will only lead to purchase of snake oil.

There are two businesses that can give you this income - i.e. KES1,000,000 net per month from capital of KES 6,000,000. Cocain and Methamphetamine (from online research)

The later would have less barriers to entry in Kenya since it's currently not well established like the former.

All the best to your friend. Make sure to update progress.

The guy is tired of working and just completed a massive real estate project using windfall income (disposing an acre of land in a posh estate to a developer). Lets just say that at this point, he can afford to pursue entrepreneurship without worrying about the kid's education for eternity. He wants peace of mind, to be an own boss and generate income from an own business.

I knew one club on Moi Avenue....owners spent about 21M to set it up,and I know they were doing sales of about 1.8-2.5M on Friday & Sato combined. Now you know how much a serious club would cost.

Its best he stays employed there or lowers his ambitions given he has 6M for startup. Also, competition in the streets is real and very ruthless. He had better have the energy and skill. My 2cents
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Tell your friend to get a gun and start operating a Shylock biz.Its very lucrative but its not for the faint hearted. That's why he needs a gun.
Else tell him to go into tenderpreneurship. He however needs to throw all his morals outside the window before attempting this.

The one business that he can try to set up with that little capital and maybe make 1million a month is a consultancy firm in his field of expertise. Take his connections from his employment and use them as the initial clients. But in consultancy work, weka peace of mind mbali saana, especially if the clients will be Kenyan clients.

Your friend is getting into entrepreneurship for the wrong reason. He should identify needs in the market and look to provide solutions, instead of thinking about how much he will make per month.

The money will follow his sweat and passion. Otherwise, when the going gets tough (and it will, especially in the three businesses you mentioned) he'll crumble.

My take; tell him to stick to what he knows i.e. real estate or as a competitor to his current employer. He should leverage his skills, experience and networks.

Your friend is actually setting himself up for an epic failure. He is going into business for the wrong reasons as someone points out above. It seems he is suffering from the lottery winners curse where you make a windfall and the next thing you do is quite your job so as a have a good relaxed life (no worries about school fees etc) Most who have taken this route tell you they regret within a few years.

My advice would be as follows. Remain in the job while you hunt for opportunities. These are almost all over in .ke. Determine in advance how much of your windfall will go to any single business and seek partners/managers who understand the stuff. In short, this is going to be a real hustle. Only then can he hope to make money and not spend his entire windfall on all manner of crap ideas and end up looking for employment after just 5 years of business failure.

My thoughts

I think the greatest obstacle to enterprenuership is seeking advice from employees. They are so risk averse, they can predict when heaven will fall to the ground. This guy has made his mind.Let him venture on his own.He has the courage and determination to succeed. But on the best business to run,he should speak with people in jua kali sector who have ran ventures for a long time.Jua kali people have lots of ideas except that most of them lack the capital required to execute their plans.

I agree with you Ali but only to a point. He should talk to both risk averse folks and also to the risk takers. The risk averse fellows will ensure that he does not blow away his cash in get quick schemes and look like a jackass at the end. The Jua Kali/entrepreneurial folks will infuse into him a sense of wanting to take some risks too and can point him in the right direction.

Tell your friend business is not as easy as he thinks. Until you make it, which will be years, it will be hard grinding and employment would be better any day of the year.
Plus self employment most times is a series of failures until you find the one that works for you.
As for the capital he has, forget no. 1 and 2. No.3 is possible but by the time they ask for goodwill in town he will be left with nothing.
He should venture into what he has a passion for and start small.

I am also leaving employment to do business. I advice your friend to keep kshs.2,000,000 as liquid float for any eventualities and invest the remaining kshs.4,000,000 in four different businesses that require a capital of kshs.1,000,000 each.
I advice your friend to aim for a net profit of kshs.10,000 a day by the end of the first year of business. It is possible to make kshs.300,000 a month with an investment of kshs.4,000,000.
Personally i am venturing into large scale modernised dairy, poultry and rabbit farming. I will also invest in my wife's dream of importing fashion products from Turkey, Dubai and China.
Other than all this put together, you have to have faith. When you get knocked down you must get up again. This is the entrepreneurial spirit. You have to make up your mind and go for it. Be willing to fold your sleeves and "get your hands dirty". Let your employees know that any task you give them you can do it yourself....."Lead by example".
Understand the market, your customer and your employees.

1M net a month on 6M capital is an annualised return of 200%. Everyone is looking for a business like that.

My two cents. You can succeed in any business venture that serves a particular need as long as you are ready to go that extra mile.By this I mean you have to stop reading stuff like what we are telling you here and get your hands dirty.Start doing biz and the experience will shape you. This idea of thinking of millions before hitting the turf will get you no where.Go out there among the vultures and fight your way out.The truth is.Those driven by passion and hardwork ethic survive to make those millions. Those who go in with the immediate big money mentality quit earlier than necessary when the shit hits the pan.Your friends needs to resign today and get serious. He should be prepared for the worst because reality may turn out to be different from plans.I hope first thing is to come up with a serious biz plan which will enable him establish the SWOT of his idea.
