But I assured him we were real friends and he explained he was taking stock of the relationships in his life.
'I know you don't like this mushy stuff but I just wanted to say thank you for being my friend,' he said.
I wanted to punch him but we were speaking on phone so I told him 'Thanks man, you're a pretty cool dude yourself.' Last February, he had created a document on Google Drive and called it Two Bald Heads (we were both losing our hair prematurely) and sent it to me. We were to write what we could work on together and it remains blank to date. He picked me up from the airport several times last year on his bike when I had to rush to studio straight from a trip. We even considered collaborating with some friends to set up a biker business. He was the peacemaker in our 'Mwanaume Ni Kujichocha' group, because men and egos. He was a photographer, an artist, a creative's creative. I was privileged to do a photo shoot with him and he also directed the 3rd edition of The Next Big Thing which I hosted. We talked often about life, love and our place in all of it and I didn't expect to talk about him in the past tense before either of us turned 30. Nzuki, we were supposed to argue until we became grumpy old men! There can't be a better way to 'language this' bro, we talked about this on Tuesday. He died as he would have wanted, on his bike where he was happiest. A hit-and-run that has made life the poorer without him.
